“The Death of JFK Jr.” (8 p.m., TLC): Eight years ago, his Piper Saratoga plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, adding another chapter to the star-crossed Kennedy story. This new documentary chronicles the actions of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, Carolyn, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, on the summer Friday when they boarded their single-engine plane en route to cousin Rory Kennedy’s weekend wedding. The program looks at the investigation into the crash as well as the aftermath of John F. Kennedy Jr.’s death.
“Anchorwoman” (8 p.m., Fox): TV news organizations long have been accused of favoring beauty over brains. Now, in the new reality series, “Anchorwoman,” all pretenses are dropped as a Tyler, Texas, station attempts to boost its ratings by hiring Lauren Jones, a gorgeous blonde model with no journalism experience, to anchor its evening newscast.
“The Knights of Prosperity” (8:30 p.m., ABC): Eugene decides Louis should apply for the job with Ray Romano’s film corporation.
“Cities of Light” (9 p.m., PBS): More than a thousand years ago, southern Spain was home to Muslims, Christians and Jews who lived — and flourished — together. Then it came to an end. “Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain” tells a story of triumph and achievement, then tragedy resulting when religious extremism arose. That era “struggled with many of the things that face us today,” says the documentary’s director, Rob Gardner — “diverse populations, nationalism, fundamentalism and war. When complexity and diversity were embraced, the culture flourished. When fundamentalism and absolutism set in, the culture became toxic and failed.” Dramatic re-enactments, footage of Spain’s landscapes and period architecture, and historical analysis by experts bring perspective to issues facing the modern world.
