WARREN — The “Rally By the River” kickoff for the 2007 United Way Campaign will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Warren Community Amphitheatre, 303 Mahoning Ave. The kickoff will be free to the public and will feature music, other entertainment, games and activities for kids.
Boil alert lifted
HUBBARD — The boil alert issued for Trumbull County water customers living in Hubbard Township is no longer in effect, the county sanitary engineer has announced.
2 rob 88-year-old man
YOUNGSTOWN — Police are looking for two thieves who robbed an 88-year-old man of $200 and his car. The South Side man told police Sunday night that two men knocked on the door of his home looking for help, claiming they had run out of gas. The victim offered to give them a ride to get gasoline. After all of them got into his 2000 Ford Taurus, one of the men put a gun to the back of his head and ordered him to drive. At East Judson Avenue and Beechwood Place, the victim was ordered out of his car and thieves sped off after taking his wallet.
4 arrests at OVI stop
AUSTINTOWN — The Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force arrested four impaired drivers at a sobriety roadblock over the weekend. A total of 510 vehicles were stopped late Saturday and early Sunday at New Road near Raccoon Road.
Charges in fatal fire
GREENVILLE, Pa. — A 42-year-old man is charged with setting a fatal 2005 fire at the O.C. Hotel and Cantina on Hadley Road. Pennsylvania State Police said Michael Watson, no address given, is charged with murder in the second degree, burglary, criminal trespass, arson, recklessly endangering another person, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. Police said the charges are related to the Aug. 16, 2005, fire where the body of James Hall, 48, was found inside the hotel. Hall died of smoke inhalation. Police discovered that the building had been burglarized and a safe containing $1,300 in cash and $100 worth of rolled quarters was missing. Watson was arraigned Monday morning before District Magistrate Lorinda Hinch and is being held without bond in the Mercer County Jail.
16 guns stolen
WARREN — Sixteen guns were stolen from a house on the 200 block of Charles Street Northeast. The burglary occurred sometime between midnight Thursday and 6 p.m. Friday. Police said someone got a ladder from the backyard and climbed up to the second-story window and, once inside, broke a locked inside door.
Facing weapon charges
WARREN — A 28-year-old Warren man was arrested after police found him with a loaded gun. Martice Hugley was on the 1500 block of Kenilworth Avenue at 4 a.m. Sunday with several people in a front yard when officers arrived. Hugley attempted to reach for his weapon when an officer told him to stop, and he complied, police reported. Hugley was taken to the Trumbull County Jail on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, using weapons while intoxicated and attempt to commit offense.
Teen remains in hospital
POLAND — A township boy injured in a freak accident last week at the high school remained in critical condition Monday. Mark DeMartino, 18, a senior at Poland Seminary High School, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center last Thursday after being struck in the head with the lid from a tobacco can. The lid flew more than 200 feet through the air after being struck by a riding lawn mower operated by a summer laborer working for the school district. DeMartino was coming out of the school building with other members of the school’s band when he was hit. He suffered a fractured skull and underwent surgery last week.
