Scrappers shut out, 2-0; held to 4 hits
Mahoning Valley had just four hits and left seven runners on base.
BATAVIA, N.Y. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost a 2-0 pitchers duel Sunday to the Batavia Muckdogs.
Scrappers starter Heath Taylor and Muckdogs starter Brian Broderick matched zeros in front of the 1,101 fans.
Taylor threw shutout ball for 51⁄3 innings with four walks. Broderick shut down the Scrappers on two hits over four innings.
The Scrappers had a runner at third with two outs in the second and didn't score. They had a runner at second in the fourth with one out in the fourth and couldn't score.
Batavia rallied in the sixth. They loaded the bases with one out. Mark Rodrigues relieved Taylor and got cleanup hitter Andrew Brown to bounce into a third to home to first double play and keep the game scoreless.
The Muckdogs got a one out double in the seventh before Rodrigues pitched out of the jam.
The Scrappers got a runner to second with one out in the eighth before Batavia reliever Damon Bruce retired Jeff Hehr and Jansy Infante to ensure the scoreless tie.
Then it happened.
Runs cross
Domnit Bolivar, 3-for-33 on the season, tripled to lead off the Batavia half of the eighth inning. After Tyler Henley grounded out Rodrigues intentionally walked Tommy Pham. Daniel Descalso then bounced a single between first and second to score the game's first run. Nate Bunton relieved Rodrigues and allowed a bloop single to Andrew Brown to give the Muckdogs a 2-0 advantage.
Josh Dew worked a shutout ninth for the Muckdogs to earn his 11th save.
Rodrigues (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs in two innings. The Scrappers had just four hits and left seven runners on base.
