Poland Township youth still critical

POLAND — A township boy injured in a freak accident last week at the high school remains in critical condition today.

Mark DeMartino, 18, a senior at Poland Seminary High School, was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center last Thursday after being struck in the head by the lid from a tobacco can.

The lid flew more than 200 feet through the air after being struck by a riding lawn mower operated by a summer laborer working for the school district.

DeMartino was coming out of the school building with other members of the school’s band when he was hit.

He suffered a fractured skull and underwent surgery last week.
