NEW YORK — Roger Clemens won in his return from a suspension and Bobby Abreu hit a go-ahead homer that clanked off the foul pole, carrying New York to victory. Clemens gave up Cameron Maybin’s first major league homer but pitched out of trouble for six innings, striking out eight to match his season high. Jorge Posada also homered and finished with three hits for the Yankees, who took control by scoring four times in the sixth. Mariano Rivera tossed a hitless ninth for his 20th save in 23 chances. Clemens (5-5) gave up 10 hits, his most since allowing 11 on Sept. 19, 2005, with Houston at Pittsburgh, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He was working on 10 days’ rest after serving a five-game suspension for hitting Toronto’s Alex Rios with a pitch on Aug. 7. Posada hit a solo shot off Chad Durbin (7-6) in the second, putting New York ahead.
Orioles 5, Blue Jays 3
TORONTO — J.R. House homered to help Baltimore’s Steve Trachsel win for the first time in 10 starts. Trachsel (6-7) allowed three runs and eight hits in 6 2-3 innings and won for the first time since June 8. Right-hander Jim Hoey relieved Trachsel after a pair of two-out singles in the seventh and got Toronto pinch-hitter Vernon Wells to ground into an inning-ending fielder’s choice. Hoey pitched around a double in the eighth, and Danys Baez pitched a perfect ninth for his second save. For the second straight start, Toronto right-hander Jesse Litsch was the victim of poor defense. The Blue Jays made two errors, leading to three unearned runs. Toronto made three errors and allowed three unearned runs in Litsch’s loss to Kansas City on Monday. On Saturday, Litsch (4-6) allowed two earned runs on six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out four.
Rangers 5, Twins 0
MINNEAPOLIS — Marlon Byrd homered and drove in four runs, sending Kameron Loe and Texas past Minnesota.
Loe (6-9) came off the disabled list and threw five shutout innings, overcoming five walks by ending four of those innings with two runners on base. The Twins stranded a man on third three times, and Boof Bonser (5-10) lost his eighth straight decision. Bonser surrendered seven hits, all five runs and three walks. Bonser, 0-8 in his last 12 starts, served up a homer to Jarrod Saltalamacchia to start the fifth.
Red Sox 10, Angels 5
BOSTON — David Ortiz’s grand slam capped a six-run fifth inning, Curt Schilling got his first win since a one-hitter two months ago, and Boston beat Los Angeles in a matchup of teams with the best records in the majors. The rally against Angels starter Jered Weaver (8-6) erased Los Angeles’ 5-0 lead and kept Boston’s AL East lead at five games over New York.

Cubs 5, Cardinals 3
CHICAGO — Daryle Ward hit a grand slam, and Derrek Lee went 3-for-4 to help Chicago beat St. Louis. Sean Marshall (6-6) pitched five-plus innings for Chicago, which has won three straight after a four-game skid. It was the Cubs’ seventh win in 17 games. Albert Pujols, Juan Encarnacion and Brendan Ryan homered for the Cardinals, who fell four games back of the NL Central-leading Cubs. St. Louis dropped the first two games of the series after a five-game winning streak. The game was delayed 1 hour, 1 minute by rain at the start and then halted again in the top of the eighth inning. After a 1-hour, 5-minute delay, reliever Carmen Pignatiello struck out Chris Duncan on one pitch to end the inning. Marshall allowed two runs and five hits, and five relievers combined to finish. Ryan Dempster pitched a perfect ninth for his 19th save.
Chicago scored all of its runs with two outs in the third. Anthony Reyes (2-12) walked Aramis Ramirez and Ward smacked his third career grand slam, and first homer of the season.
Giants 4, Marlins 3
MIAMI — Barry Bonds hit his record 760th homer and gave the Florida Marlins’ biggest crowd in 21⁄2 seasons just what it came to see. Bonds’ 26th homer of the season, a two-run shot, lifted the San Francisco Giants to a win over the Marlins on Saturday night. Bonds also struck out a season-high three times. Ryan Klesko had two hits and scored twice for the Giants, and Matt Cain (5-13) struck out seven in seven innings for his second win in eight starts. Brad Hennessey gave up a leadoff double in the ninth before finishing for his 11th save.
Diamondbacks 12, Braves 6
ATLANTA — Rookie right-hander Micah Owings went 4-for-5, including a pair of mammoth homers, drove in six runs, scored four times and pitched three-hit ball through seven innings as Arizona defeated Atlanta. It was the fourth straight win and 21st in 26 games for the NL West-leading Diamondbacks, who pounded out 15 hits in handing the Braves their third straight loss.
Brewers 8, Reds 4
MILWAUKEE — Gabe Gross and Geoff Jenkins each hit three-run homers to snap Milwaukee’s five-game losing streak.
Milwaukee stayed within a half-game of NL Central-leading Chicago. The Brewers had been outscored 42-14 during their five-game losing streak.Claudio Vargas (10-4) became the Brewers’ second 10-game winner this season, matching Ben Sheets. Vargas, who won for the first time since June 27, pitched 5 2-3 innings and allowed one run and seven hits. He struck out five and walked five.
Mets 7, Nationals 4
WASHINGTON — Luis Castillo homered for the first time in more than a year, David Wright hit a tiebreaking two-run double, and surging New York beat Washington.
