Boardman’s 13-14 softball team finishes fifth in JL World Series


KIRTLAND, Wash. — The Boardman 13-14 All-Star softball team finished fifth in the Junior League World Series that ended Saturday.

In the fifth-sixth place, Boardman (the Ohio and Central States champion) defeated the Southwest champion from Grand Junction, Colo., 6-1.

Friday, Boardman defeated the series host team from Redmond, Wash., by the score of 9-7. Julie Sokol was the winning pitcher while Nicola Gabriele’s two hits included a double. Dani Petrus’ three hits included a double.

The top two teams in each the Series’ two pools advanced to the semifinals.

Boardman, 2-2 in pool play, tied the West champion Westchester (Calif.) for second place in Pool B. Westchester was awarded second place by virtue of its 16-15 victory over Boardman.

Baseball

PURCELLVILLE, Va. — Youngstown’s 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star Team took its first loss Saturday at the Babe Ruth World Series.

Youngstown lost to Bryant (Ariz.), 9-6. Justin Wagler took the mound loss while Forrest Perron and Dillon Williams tripled.

Youngstown is 1-1 in pool play, which continues today at 1:30 p.m. when Youngstown plays Midwest Plains. Pool play ends Tuesday at 8 p.m. when Youngstown plays host team Loudon County.
