Gov. Ted Strickland appointed Warren Mayor Michael O’Brien to a seat on the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission.

The commission is responsible for conducting a review of state’s sentencing statutes and making recommendations on changes.

O’Brien is serving his first four-year term as mayor. He also served 11 years as a Trumbull County commissioner and 12 years as a Warren councilman.

O’Brien worked three years as a corrections officer for the Warren Police Department and 12 years as a juvenile probation officer for Trumbull County Family Court.

O’Brien has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Youngstown State University.

Also Friday, Strickland, a Democrat formerly of Lisbon, appointed Walter Pishkur, president and chief executive officer for Aqua Ohio, as a member of the state’s Private Water Systems Advisory Board.

The board advises the Ohio Department of Health’s director on the revocation or nonrenewal of the registration of private water system contractors and recommends the amount of surety bond amounts required of private water systems contractors.

Since 1992, Pishkur has served as president and CEO of Aqua, which provides water service to nearly 300,000 people in nine counties including Mahoning and Trumbull.

He previously served as the executive vice president and general manager for Inter-State Water Co. in Illinois. Pishkur is the past chairman of the Ohio chapter of the National Association of Water Companies.

Pishkur received a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Illinois.
