It’s time to get a library card
CHICAGO — Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school, and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
This September marks the 20th anniversary of Library Card Sign-up Month, part of the American Library Association’s (ALA) national campaign to encourage parents to obtain the best back-to-school tool for their child — a library card.
“The Smartest Card. Get It. Use It. @ your library” is this year’s theme, and Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback of the 2006 Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, has been named national spokesman.
Hundreds of libraries throughout the country will showcase the many free educational and recreational programs available to their communities.
The most current data show that libraries are a valuable resource for families.
According the ALA’s State of America’s Libraries Report, circulation of children’s materials (those under 14) in U.S. public libraries increased 44 percent from 1994 to 2004, and attendance in children’s programs increased 42 percent.
