HOWLAND — H.C. Mines Intermediate School, 850 Howland-Wilson Road N.E., will hold orientation classes for all new pupils at 1 p.m. Aug. 21 and 9 a.m. Aug. 22. Parents and pupils are to meet in the school's cafeteria.

Brookfield open house

BROOKFIELD — Brookfield High School, 7003 Grove St., will hold an open house for parents and students in grades nine through 12 on Aug. 28. Ninth-graders, new students and their parents or guardians are asked to meet in the auditorium at 6 p.m. All other students and their parents are to enter by the high school office at 6:30 p.m.

Fitch freshman meeting

AUSTINTOWN — Fitch High School, 4560 Falcon Drive, will hold a freshman orientation Wednesday to explain class schedules, locker assignments, building layout and more. Students whose last names begin with A through L are to report at 9 a.m. Those whose names begin with M through Z are scheduled for 11 a.m. Parents are urged to attend.

New pupil registrations

HUBBARD — St. Patrick Elementary School, 38 E. Water St., is accepting new pupil registrations Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The school offers financial aid and participates in the state voucher program. The school will hold an open house from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday. Kindergarten registration will also be at that time. New and current pupils can drop off their school supplies for the coming year during the open house.

Boccie tournament set

YOUNGSTOWN — The Ursuline High School Alumni Association will sponsor a boccie tournament at the MVR Restaurant, 410 N. Walnut St., at 3 p.m. Sept. 30. For information, call (330) 744-4563, Ext. 125.

Session for parents

YOUNGSTOWN — Ohio Virtual Academy will hold a parent information session Monday for parents and children interested in enrolling in a tuition-free, online charter school. There will be information on curriculum and a demonstration of the academic program. Enrollment is open for grades K-11. Monday’s session is set for 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Youngstown South, 7410 South Ave.

SLIPPERY ROCK,. Pa. — Dr. Ramona Nelson, professor of nursing at Slippery Rock University, has been named a fellow in the Academy of Nursing Education by the National League for Nursing. Nelson, considered to be a pioneer in the use of technology in nursing education, will be inducted during the League’s Sept. 26-29 summit in Phoenix, Ariz. She is chairwoman of the university’s nursing department and has been a professor since 1994. She was a nursing informatics innovator, combining concepts from computer, information and nursing science to create new approaches to deliver health-care education and published a book on the subject. Nelson has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Duquesne University and a master’s in nursing, master’s in information science and doctorate in higher education from the University of Pittsburgh.
