2 local girls win awards at Ohio State Fair


AUSTINTOWN — Alyssa Armstrong and Jessica Ricker, both of Austintown, were winners at this year’s Ohio State Fair.

Alyssa, a fifth-grader from Immaculate Heart of Mary School, won four awards in Camp Fire Adventure Club division (grades three through five). She won an overall Grand Award for her entries in a variety of categories including crafts, scrapbooks, drawing and sewing. Alyssa also won Best of Show in Heritage for the headband and medicine bag she made from leather. Her final two awards were from the Sewing Style Show competition in which she won the Grand Award for overall excellence and Best of Show for her shirt entry.

Ricker, a senior at Fitch High School, won an overall Grand Award in the Horizon Club division (grades nine through 12). Ricker also won Best of Show for her Individual Needlepoint Project and in Creative Writing for her story titled “An Unfortunate Time.”

Another local award went to Teens in Action Camp Fire Club, which received a group Grand Award. The girls received their awards Sunday on the Youth Center Stage at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus.
