Penguins place four
on Preseason squad

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Youngstown State football team had four individuals, two on offense and two on defense, selected Preseason All-American by The Sports Network, the service announced on Thursday. Only Appalachian State (five) had more players named to one of the three teams.

Leading the way was first-team selection defensive tackle Mychal Savage. Brad Samsa was a second-team All-Gateway selection as a sophomore.

Louis Irizarry caught 25 passes for 304 yards and touchdowns in his first year with the program in 2006.

James Terry posted another strong campaign last year and is a two-time first-team All-Gateway pick.

Hanni IV to Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Ursuline High graduate Don Hanni IV will continue his football career as a lineman at Norwich University, a military academy in Vermont.

Becka named coach

COLUMBIANA — Lisa Becka, former LPGA Class A teaching golf professional whose family owned an operated Copeland Hills Golf Course for many years, was named head men’s and women’s golf coach at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurenburg, N.C.

Becka played college golf at University of Central Florida and played eight seasons as a professional on the Futures Tour, Gold Coast Tour and on sponsor exemptions on the LPGA Tour.

Quaker City ready
for O’Reilly Jam

SALEM — Quaker City Raceway will host the O’Reilly Auto Parts Thunder Jam, presented by Torco Racing Fuels, Saturday at 7 p.m.

Headlining the evening will be the Super Shockwave, a jet truck with three jet engines; Ken Nelson’s wheel-standing “Cool Bus,” and the battle of jet train dragsters, featuring “Chicago Fire” vs. “Terminator.”

FANtastic Five
return Saturday

HARTFORD — The FANtastic Five division drivers will roll onto Sharon Speedway's 3/8-mile dirt oval for the penultimate round of the track championship on Saturday night when the racing commences at 6 p.m.

As a result of the cancellation on July 21, fans are encouraged to bring their tickets and pit passes from July 21 to ANY NIGHT of racing for the remainder of the 2007 season in exchange for admission into the track.

SUNRIVER, Ore. — Mike Reid and Mark McNulty put their disappointing Champions Tour seasons behind them in the first round of The Tradition.

They shot 6-under-66s on Thursday in the tour’s fourth major of the year, leaving them a stroke ahead of David Edwards on the Crosswater Golf Club in the high desert of central Oregon. Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw and Bruce Summerhays were two strokes behind.

Abrosimova scores 25

MINNEAPOLIS — Svetlana Abrosimova scored a season-high 25 points and Seimone Augustus added 19 as the Minnesota Lynx beat the Detroit Shock 87-77 on Thursday night.

Abrosimova hit her fourth 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter to give the Lynx a 31-16 lead and become the 51st player in WNBA history to score 2,000 points. Minnesota (9-24) set a record for points in the quarter and tied a team mark with seven 3s.

Ivory Latta had 15 points to lead the Shock (24-9), who have lost three straight since clinching home-court advantage throughout the postseason on Saturday.

Detroit’s Katie Smith, the all-time leading scorer in women’s basketball, had 10 points to top 6,000 as a professional.
