Poland band member suffers fractured skull

POLAND — A senior band member from Poland Seminary High School suffered a fractured skull when a lawn mower tractor at the school struck an object that hit the boy in the back of the neck.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Zorn, who declined to release the student’s name, said that a summer worker was finishing mowing the lawn as band students emerged from the school about 11 a.m. Thursday.

The mower struck the lid from a snuff can and threw it more than 200 feet where it struck the male student.

The boy was transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center where he underwent surgery Thursday for a fractured skull.

“My heart just goes out to the young boy and his family,” Zorn said.

Zorn was meeting Friday with police, the lawn crew and insurance agents representing the district.
