YOUNGSTOWN — The city’s board of control approved a tax abatement for a North Side steel warehouse and processing company wanting to expand.

Struthers Metal Service — through its property subsidiary, Shear Realty — received a 75-percent, 10-year real property tax abatement from the board of control Thursday.

The Intertech Drive business plans to invest $1.05 million to $1.4 million to construct a 60-foot-by-250-foot building and to buy new machinery and equipment.

The 26-year-old company would pay about $25,654 and save about $76,962 in real property taxes over the 10 years under this agreement.

The business employs 25 people and plans to add 10 new workers over the next three years.

Firetruck needs repairs

Also Thursday, the board approved a $27,116.52 payment to a Dayton-area company to repair an aerial firetruck.

The truck was at Sutphen Corp. for routine maintenance last month when workers there discovered a crack, said Fire Chief John J. O’Neill Jr. The crack is on the vehicle’s bucket, which is attached to the truck’s ladder and where a firefighter stands with a hose to extinguish a fire.

The crack to the truck occurred when the bucket scraped against the side of the downtown fire station, O’Neill said.

The crack went unnoticed until Sutphen notified the fire department, O’Neill said. City fire officials then looked at the station’s exterior and discovered the scrape on the building, he said.

The city is considering filing a claim with its insurance company to get back at least a portion of the repair cost, he said.
