Jammers’ error keys Scrappers comeback

Mark Thompson and Jonathon Holt were key contributors.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Mark Thompson’s single scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning, after a Jamestown error opened the floodgates, as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers defeated the Jamestown Jammers, 2-1, Thursday night in a New York-Penn League game.

The Scrappers (29-23) have won 12 of their last 16 games.

Mahoning Valley pounced on Jamestown’s sloppiness in the ninth. With one on and one out, second baseman Ryan Curry's throwing error on a would-be double play ball kept the inning going.

After Adam White flew out Thompson singled to right off Curry's glove to give the Scrappers a 2-1 lead.

Jonathon Holt worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his second win of the year.

The Scrappers opened the scoring in the first inning when White led off with a double and scored on Jansy Infante's single to left field.

Jamestown tied the score in the third off Kelvin De La Cruz on a double play ground ball.

Mound dominance

From that point on, pitching dominated as De La Cruz allowed just one run and two hits in five innings. Jammers starter Jay Voss allowed one run on six hits in five innings.

Neither team mustered much offense for the rest of the night as Mahoning Valley managed just three hits from the third through eighth innings.

Scrappers pitching also dominated Jamestown, at one point retiring 16 of 18 hitters. Jimmy Brettl retired all six hitters he faced in two innings.

Todd Martin was the lone Scrapper with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.

Dan Frega, who was named last week’s New York-Penn League pitcher of the Week, will start for the Scrappers tonight.
