Trumbull OVI checkpoint

The Trumbull County OVI Task Force and area police departments will operate a sobriety checkpoint to deter and intercept impaired drivers today and Saturday at unspecified locations. The checkpoints will be held in conjunction with nearby saturation patrols to aggressively combat alcohol-related injury and fatal crashes. Funding for the OVI Task Force is provided by a grant through the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Governors Highway Safety Office.

Fatal crash investigation

VIENNA — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal traffic crash on state Route 11 northbound. The driver of a motorcycle was killed when he was run over by a tractor-trailer after the bike’s collision with a third vehicle. The patrol is not yet releasing the names of those involved in the crash, which happened early Wednesday.

Woman wins $10,000

CLEVELAND — Patricia Hoysack of Warren won a $10,000 top prize for having 10 words spelled correctly on the Ohio Lottery’s Doubling Star Cashword instant game. After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 31 percent, Hoysack will receive a check for $6,900.

Hoysack bought her winning ticket from J&B Birite, 2430 Youngstown Road S.E. in Warren. At least 23 top $10,000 prizes are still available for winning. Doubling Star Cashword cost $2. The game began selling June 15.

Bridge to be torn down

MINERAL RIDGE — The Trumbull County engineer’s office has told Weathersfield Township trustees that work to tear down the West Park Avenue bridge over the Mahoning River will begin in January. Trustees were told it is easier to tear down the bridge in inclement weather, setting the stage to rebuild the span when the weather improves.

Trustee John Vogel said the township bears no cost for demolition or reconstruction of the bridge and said the county has been doing preliminary engineering on the project. Work to clear land and redirect power lines is complete.

The bridge carries West Park Avenue traffic over the river west of Waddell Park. Because the West Park Fire Station No. 42 is west of the bridge, the township fire department is making arrangements to have a truck with a dedicated independent staff parked at RMI Titanium to service calls in the DeForest Road and Heaton Chute area.

Civil case is concluded

WARREN — Dr. Theodore Spirtos and his wife, Georgia, of Poland, who sought to reopen a civil case in which they were ordered to pay a judgment of $190,989 plus interest to Bartholomew Builders of Hubbard, have decided against pursuing the case any further.

This week, Visiting Judge Thomas P. Curran of Cuyahoga County, sitting by assignment in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, approved a motion filed by Atty. Andrew W. Suhar, Dr. Spirtos’ bankruptcy trustee, asking that the civil case be concluded.

Suhar noted that Dr. Spirtos and his wife had received a discharge of their bankruptcy case in federal court recently. That means the court had discharged the couple from the liabilities of their creditors, including Bartholomew Builders. The settlement, approved May 16, ordered Dr. Spirtos to pay $60,000 to his creditors.

Commission fills position

WARREN — The Trumbull County Planning Commission has hired a Champion woman to a position being vacated by planner Nickolas Bellas, who resigned recently. The planning commission approved the hiring of Lisa M. Ramsey, a 2005 graduate of Youngstown State University, at a pay rate of $31,881. Among the projects she will work on are comprehensive plans for Bazetta and Vienna townships.

Cameo of Caring award

FARRELL, Pa. — Jaynee Reese was named this year’s Cameo of Caring awardee for UPMC Horizon. She will represent the hospital at the Cameos of Caring awards gala this fall in Pittsburgh. Established in 1999 by the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, Cameos of Caring recognize exceptional nurses in the region. Reese is a registered nurse in the emergency department at UPMC Horizon. She received her nursing diploma from what is now Sharon Regional Health System school of nursing and later earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Penn State University. Reese, of West Middlesex, Pa., is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society.
