A list of things Youngstown could try before JEDDS

A list of things Youngstown could try before JEDDS

EDITOR:

This letter is intended to make readers go hmmmmmmm when wondering about Youngstown’s intentions.

I've been reading in your paper lately about the bickering between the townships outside of Youngstown and the mayor of Youngstown about these Joint Economic Development Districts that he wants to set up. Seems like the main reason the mayor wants these JEDDs is because Youngstown can't get enough money from taxes to run the city because nobody wants to live in the city. I think I've come up with a way the mayor can make some more money and not have to use other area’s money to do it.

1. Check with the chief of police as to why a patrol car has to sit outside of North Side Hospital for 2 hours and 23 minutes running while an officer has to write a report inside the hospital. When I called down the station to inquire about this, I was told by a captain that it was left running because of the computer inside the patrol car.

2. Anyone try to make it down Albert Street without being swallowed up in the potholes or at least have their teeth rattled loose? Why would you have a road crew, on an early Sunday morning no less, painting on Albert Street before it is resurfaced ? The overtime for a Sunday could be used instead of those JEDDs, couldn't it?

3. The mayor really needs to check with his road crew supervisor about the supervisor’s employees sitting in their trucks in plain view of the very people passing by who will be paying these JEDDs while they read newspapers and magazines. This could also go to include the police officers who have been seen doing the same thing.

4. Just think of the gas money the city would save and the need not to have JEDDs if the mayor had the intestinal fortitude to make all the supervisors use their own cars to get back and forth to work — just like the people who would have to pay for these JEDDs do.

5. Maybe have a couple of parking lots downtown that do not charge for parking would attract people downtown.

6. This one’s going to hurt, but the times they are a changing, The Catholic school systems that are in the city and use the city's services need to be taxed just like all other businesses in the city. This has been going on for way too long and needs to be changed.

I'm sure there are other suggestions. Let’s help out ol’ Mayor Williams out so he can run a more efficient office and forget those nasty JEDDs.

Be thankful for upkeep of
Valley bridges, sister urges

EDITOR:

We should appreciate the consistent planning, leadership, and financial resources our area has received for new and improved bridges. Truly this is a team effort. The city, county, Youngstown State University, federal and state governments as well as local architects, contractors and dedicated workers have all contributed toward this common good.

I am one of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and live on the Northside. Our Ursuline Sisters have served the needs of the city, county and beyond since 1874. Many sisters continue to live in local city convents and continue to minister to those in need — especially the disadvantaged.

We offer our sympathy and concern for all those who are suffering from the tragedy in the Twin Cities.

In the name of the Ursuline Sisters who travel day by day on the bridges, we thank all who are responsible for our safety and the safety of others who journey over the bridges.
