in TSN poll
PHILADELPHIA — Youngstown State was fifth in The Sports Network’s preseason FCS college football poll Tuesday.
Appalachian State, the two-time defending national champion, collected 67 first-place votes for 1,771 points and earned the preseason No. 1 ranking, followed by Montana with 1,680.
Massachusetts and North Dakota State ranked third and fourth with 1,551 and 1,548 points, respectively, followed by the Penguins with 1,417.
Three other Gateway Conference teams are ranked in the top 12 — Illinois State at No. 7, UNI at No. 9 and Southern Illinois at No. 12.
Future Gateway teams North Dakota St. and South Dakota St., the Penguins’ opponent Sept. 8, were picked fourth and 20th, respectively. YSU will play four teams ranked in the preseason top 20.

O’Halloran fifth
at World Games
BANGKOK, Thailand — U.S.A. Swim Team member Tyler O’Halloran, a Boardman High graduate, finished in fifth place in the 50-meter breaststroke at the World University Games today.
More than 50 swimmers representing 34 different countries competed in the event. O’Halloran’s time of 28.17 was a career best. Ukraine’s Oleg Lisogor placed first with a time of 27.74.
O’Halloran also placed 18th in the 100-meter breaststroke in the time of 1:03.08. Ukraine’s Valeri Dymo was first in 1:01.27.

Boardman swimmers
earn All-America
BOARDMAN — The Boardman High 200 freestyle relay team and junior Conner O’Halloran (50 freestyle) earned All-America honors from the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.
O’Halloran earned the honor by swimming a 21.40 in the 50 freestyle to finish fourth at last year’s state meet. O’Halloran was joined by Brian Worhatch, Mike Barringer, and Kenny Drombosky in the 200 freestyle relay. The All-America relay time of 1:27.40 was good enough for seventh at the state meet. The time also set a school record.
In the national team rankings, Boardman placed 14th for high schools with a male population between 900 and 1,400. The Class 2 rankings were determined by a power point system awared to individual times recorded by the swimmers during the season.
Teams submit their best times for all events to NISCA. Boardman was ranked the top team in Ohio in Class 2.
Prep golf roundup
•ALLIANCE — The Lake High School boys team shot 310 and Perry girls team 332 as they captured titles in the Federal League pre-season golf tournament Tuesday at Tannenhauf golf course.
Tyler Light of Perry fired low gross 72, but Lake won with 310 points. Boardman was fifth and Fitch seventh in the field of eight schools.
Megan Weaver shot 77 to lead the Perry girls to the title with 332 points. Boardman was sixth and Fitch seventh.
•YOUNGSTOWN — Elena Pipino and Lindsa Mullhall each shot 96 as Warren JFK won the Bishop’s Cup at Mill Creek golf course.
The Eagles edged Mooney 393-398 for the title. Tina Jones of Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas shot low gross 80, while Amber Bruno of Mooney carded 85 and Katy Collins of Ursuline had 88.

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown/Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association is holding its workshop tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the ITAM Centre on Meridian Rd.
