BOARDMAN — Two businesses and a landlord reported copper thefts in the township.

Employees at Magnetech Industrial Services, Bev Road, told police that someone cut a padlock on the fence to an outside storage area and took two coils of copper valued at $4,000. The theft occurred between Saturday and Sunday and was reported Monday.

A representative of RLM Electric, Western Reserve Road, told police that 200 feet of copper wire was stolen between Friday and Monday from a job site on West Boulevard. The wire had been run through the building’s hallways and to the main point in the lobby. It was coiled into several small bunches.

A Forest Hill Drive man reported copper pipe taken from the basement of one of his rental properties on Chester Drive. The theft occurred between Aug. 9 and Monday.

Jail to add more bunks

MERCER, Pa. — Acceptance of a bid from a Maryland company for 28 additional bunks for the Mercer County Jail is on Mercer County commissioners’ agenda for Thursday. The G-5 Co., Baltimore, offered the bunks for $21,340.

Other bidders were Willow Products, Decatur, Ala., $27,939; Jailcraft Inc., Steubenville Md., $46,822; and Cornerstone Detention Products, Tanner, Ala., $53,500.

The extra bunks will be installed to make double cells out of some that now hold only one bunk, in an effort to meet a growing census at the new jail, commissioners said Tuesday.

Court denies appeal

YOUNGSTOWN — The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit has affirmed the judgment of a federal jury and denied the appeal of Michael J. Budd, once second in command at the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department. The appellate court’s decision was released Monday. In 2005, the jury found Budd guilty of violating the civil rights of three jail inmates.

The 46-year-old Boardman man, who once held the rank of major, was sentenced to eight years in prison. He is incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, N.C., with a projected release of Aug. 4, 2012.

Woman wins $2 million

ORANGEVILLE — Debra R. Kettering of Greenville, Pa., won $2 million after scratching the Ohio Lottery’s $300 Million Extravaganza instant ticket, which costs $10. Kettering chose the annuity, $100,000 a year. After federal and state taxes totaling 31 percent, she’ll get a check for $69,000 for the next 20 years. Kettering bought the winning ticket from Wilson General Store, 7395 State Line Road, which receives $10,000 for selling a winning ticket.

Two arrests made

YOUNGSTOWN — Two arrests were made in the Stiles Market parking lot on Stiles Avenue on the East Side after police found a gun, marijuana and a stolen car, reports show.

The unlicensed driver of the stolen car, a 16-year-old Atkinson Avenue boy reported as a runaway, was turned over to his mother Monday evening and expected to face charges in juvenile court. Police said a bag of marijuana was found near the door jamb when he got out of the car.

While the boy was being questioned, Fanon Vines, 29, of South Truesdale Avenue ran through rear yards when police approached him near the store. A loaded gun fell as he ran, police said. He was caught near McGuffey Road and arrested on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

Shotgun fired at house

YOUNGSTOWN — A house in the 70 block of East Florida Avenue was fired at with a shotgun by someone in a van, police said. Residents of the house took cover. One young man, age not given, had his leg grazed by the shotgun blast. Police found several shotgun pellet markings on the front porch between the door and the living room window. Police were told the shooting stemmed from a feud between two young women. The shooting took place late Sunday night but wasn’t reported until late Monday morning.
