‘Jake brakes’ study

HILLSVILLE, Pa. — Mahoning Township supervisors agreed Tuesday to ask PennDOT to study whether truck engine retardants known as “jake brakes” should be forbidden on U.S. Route 224 and Pa. Route 551 in the township.

They took the action in response to a letter from township resident Robert McKibben.

Also Tuesday, Supervisor Poncho Exposito announced the township fire department will hold its 15th annual benefit car show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 9 at the township park. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. Those interested should call the fire department for more information.

Supervisors approved a subdivision for residential property owned by John and Krystal Ryhal on Skyhill Road. The 23.3-acre lot is being divided into two lots.

Supervisors reported that dumping of garbage continues on the ground around large trash bins outside the municipal building, despite prosecution of several violators over the last month. Signs forbid dumping on the ground and warn that permits for dumping must be obtained from the township.
