“The Closer” (9 p.m., TNT): Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Southern belle crime-buster

“The Closer” (9 p.m., TNT): Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Southern belle crime-buster running a special LAPD murder investigation unit, is directed by her longtime hubby, Kevin Bacon. It’s an encore for this family affair: actor-director Bacon was behind the camera of the hit TNT drama for an episode last season. This time, Brenda’s squad car is targeted by a hail of bullets while she escorts a TV reporter doing a story about the department.

“Hell’s Kitchen” (9 p.m., Fox): Fox has already ordered a fourth season of the culinary-boot-camp series starring super-chef Gordon Ramsay, to air in 2008.

“Slacker Cats” (10 p.m., ABC Family): Every cat in America can relate: Couch potato tabbies Buckley and Eddie exert minimal energy as they paw through various low-key adventures. Giving voice to the cats and their compatriots: Alex Borstein, Niecy Nash, Emo Philips, Sinbad, Nicole Sullivan, Kiersten Warren and Harland Williams.

“The Hills” (10 p.m., MTV): Lauren continues her climb up the fashion career ladder in Season 3.

“Weeds” (10 p.m., Showtime): Mary-Louise Parker is back for a third round as pot-peddling widow Nancy Botwin.

“Californication” (10:30 p.m., Showtime): David Duchovny is back in series TV as New York author Hank Moody, whose novel has been adapted into a trashy romantic comedy flick. Now he lives in Los Angeles as a single father of a preteen daughter (Madeleine Martin). Hank stays busy with his favorite pastimes: pining for his former girlfriend (Natascha McElhone), dabbling in drugs and liquor and spending time with women. And, oh yes, he’s still trying to write.
