PONY tournament
worthy of praise

Competing for a national title is an experience of a lifetime for a young athlete. To be able to do so right at home — where family, friends and local supporters can be a part of it — makes it even more beautiful.

Congratulations to our Valley Extreme Red (16 and under) and the Valley Extreme (12 and under), both now national champions and to the Valley Extreme Blue (16 and under), who tied for third place after waging an exciting 10-inning battle.

The commissioners, municipalities, volunteers, PONY officials, tourism staff and local businesses really did our area proud in their handling of the PONY National tournaments. Their willingness to go beyond what was expected of them and their continual attitudes of support and friendliness helped to make these wonderful events.

My thanks to these people — along with the coaches, families, fans and volunteers of the Valley Extreme organization and other local teams — for their commitment and tireless efforts on behalf of the girls who play fast pitch. In addition, I thank Dave Anderson for having the vision to recognize that this could be a powerhouse area for girls softball and the determination it took to bring PONY Nationals here.
