New pitch count rules in effect at the Little League World Series, which begins Friday in South Williamsport, Pa.

The manager must remove a pitcher once he/she reaches 85 pitches, though the pitcher may stay in the game at another position. Exception: If a pitcher reaches the limit while facing a batter, the pitcher may continue to pitch until that batter reaches base or is out.

Intentional walks: Before a pitch is delivered, the catcher must inform the umpire that the team wishes to issue an intentional walk. The umpire waves the batter to first base. The ball is dead.

Rest requirements

A player throwing 46 or more pitches in a day must rest two days before pitching again.

A player throwing 21 to 45 pitches in a day must rest one day before pitching again.

No rest is required for someone throwing fewer than 21 pitches in a day.

A player may not pitch in consecutive games unless:

a) He/she threw less than 21 pitches in the previous game.

b) The previous game was at another Little League tournament level, and the pitcher has received the required number of days of rest.

A player may not pitch in more than one game in a day.
