MARCUS GARVEY | A brief history


Some facts about Marcus Mosiah Garvey (1887-1940) :

Around 1910, left his birth country of Jamaica to work on a banana plantation in Costa Rica.
Saw working conditions of blacks throughout Central Americaand set out to improve their lives.
Went to England, where he learned ideas from the Pan African movement which, among other things, encouraged blacks to be independent of white people and rely more on one another.
In 1914, moved back to Jamaica, where he formed the United Negro Improvement Association.
By 1920, UNIA, set up to empower black people, had about 1,100 chapters in 40 countries.
Also started the Black Star Shipping Co., which made boats to take some black people back to Africa.
Founded black newspapers, wrote literature and gave speeches to espouse his ideas.
