AMERICAN LEAGUE

Athletics 16, Tigers 10

DETROIT — Jack Cust hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs, and Oakland rallied after blowing a seven-run lead to beat reeling Detroit. Travis Buck had four hits, scored three times and drove in three runs for Oakland. Donnie Murphy homered and drove in three runs as the A’s handed Detroit its seventh loss in nine games. Macay McBride (0-1) retired the first hitter of the sixth, but hit Buck before walking the next two batters. Cust then hit a 429-foot line drive to center field to give Oakland a 12-9 lead. Ruddy Lugo (3-0) got the win pitching two innings of relief. Neither starter was involved in the decision. Oakland’s Joe Blanton gave up nine runs in four-plus innings, while Jordan Tata gave up seven runs in two-plus innings.

Orioles 6, Red Sox 5

BALTIMORE — Brian Roberts led off the ninth inning with a double and scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Nick Markakis, giving Baltimore a comeback win over Boston.

The Orioles rallied from a 5-1 deficit with a four-run eighth against Eric Gagne, then won it in the ninth against Hideki Okajima (3-1). It was the first major league loss for Okajima. Baltimore rookie Jim Hoey (1-0) got four outs to earn his first big league win. Baltimore’s Erik Bedard and Boston rookie Daisuke Matsuzaka locked up in pitching duel until the eighth inning, when Boston sent 10 batters to the plate, six of whom got hits. Matsuzaka allowed one run and four hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and now has 159, breaking the single-season record for Boston rookies set by Ken Brett (155 in 1970).

White Sox 5, Mariners 3

CHICAGO — Rookie Josh Fields hit two homers, Jermaine Dye went deep and Juan Uribe doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh. Tied at 3, the Mariners failed to capitalize after loading the bases with one out in the seventh and paid for it in the bottom half. Dye led off with a single and came around on Uribe’s double off the wall in left, making it 4-3. Uribe advanced to third on the throw home and scored with two out on Darin Erstad’s triple to shallow center, the ball rolling by a diving Ichiro Suzuki. That made a winner of Javier Vazquez (10-6), who allowed three runs and nine hits in seven innings. He allowed one intentional walk while striking out three and improved to 7-1 in his last 10 starts.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Marlins 4, Mets 3

NEW YORK — Hanley Ramirez hit a go-ahead, two-run double off Billy Wagner in the ninth inning for Florida. Carlos Beltran hit a three-run homer in his return from the disabled list, giving the Mets a 3-2 lead they handed to Wagner (1-1) in the ninth. He entered with a streak of 21 scoreless innings. It was Wagner’s second blown save in 28 chances this season. Former Mets farmhand Matt Lindstrom (2-3)worked a scoreless inning for the win and Kevin Gregg got three quick outs for his 25th save in 27 opportunities. Daniel Barone had a chance to win his major league debut for Florida, taking a 2-0 lead into the fifth before bad defense and a bad pitch did him in on an unseasonably damp, chilly night at Shea Stadium. Jose Reyes led off and reached on a throwing error by second baseman Dan Uggla, Castillo followed with a bunt single that third baseman Miguel Cabrera was slow to field, and Beltran drove a 2-1 pitch to right-center for his 20th home run. Brian Lawrence, the latest Mets pitcher trying to secure the No. 5 spot in the rotation, lasted six innings, permitting two runs and eight hits while striking out six in his second start for New York since being called up from Triple-A New Orleans.

Phillies 5, Braves 4

PHILADELPHIA — Jayson Werth scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Yunel Escobar in the seventh inning, and Philadelphia hung on for its third win in four games and pulled ahead of Atlanta for second in the NL East. Cole Hamels (13-5) gave up four runs and five hits in the first inning, but retired 17 of his last 19 batters while allowing just two baserunners. Reliever Peter Moylan (4-2) surrendered a leadoff single to Werth in the seventh. Chris Coste put down a sacrifice bunt, moving Werth to second base, and pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs singled deep into the hole at shortstop. Escobar made a fine backhand play but threw the ball wide of first base. The play was ruled a single and a throwing error, allowing Werth to score. Tom Gordon pitched the ninth for his sixth save in 10 chances and first since May 1.

Dodgers 2, Cardinals 1

ST. LOUIS — James Loney broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer off Adam Wainwright with one out in the ninth inning for the Dodgers.. Before Loney hit his fifth homer into the right-field seats on an 0-1 pitch, the Dodgers had been on the verge of being shut out for the fifth time in seven games. After Russell Martin singled, Loney, who batted third for the fourth time all season, homered for the first time since July 24. It also was the first long ball allowed by Wainwright (10-9) in seven starts covering 48 1-3 innings. Cardinals pitchers had thrown 25 consecutive scoreless innings before Loney’s homer.
