Man pleads innocent to manslaughter, assault

WARREN — Keith M. Brown II, 19, of York Avenue Northwest, has pleaded innocent to voluntary manslaughter and felonious assault, both with specifications that he used a gun. Brown entered the pleas Thursday to Judge Peter Kontos of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. His bond was continued at $50,000. Brown surrendered to police in early June after an arrest warrant was issued for him. Police said Brown shot Terrandall J. Monday, of Perkinswood Boulevard, during an argument on Fifth Street on May 16. Monday died in St. Elizabeth Health Center a couple of weeks after the shooting.

Woman waives hearing

YOUNGSTOWN — The woman accused of taking part in the disappearance and death of a teenage boy waived her preliminary hearing Thursday in municipal court. Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly bound the case against Jennifer L. Snyder, 34, of Pyatt Street, over to a Mahoning County grand jury. Snyder faces felony charges of abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, child endangering and permitting child abuse. The boy, James P. Higham, was reported missing in early January 2002. Detectives believe he was killed June 15, 2001, when he was 151⁄2. Snyder, a relative (aunt) through marriage, had custody of the boy after his parents split. In an unrelated case, Snyder’s probation in a felony telephone harassment conviction in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court was terminated last week and she was sentenced to one year in prison with credit for 238 days already spent in jail.

Girl denies setting fire

YOUNGSTOWN — The 17-year-old girl accused of starting a fire at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center entered pleas of denial on Wednesday in juvenile court to misdemeanor charges of criminal damaging and obstructing official business. Pamela Schindler of Salem is accused of using a lighter to ignite a bucket of solvent May 4 at the Palmyra Road school. The fire caused $4.5 million in damage.

New school dedication

AUSTINTOWN — The new Austintown Middle School building, 800 S. Raccoon Road, will be dedicated at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Speakers will include school board members and architects for the building. Afterward, the Fitch Falcons varsity football team will host a preview game against Akron Butchel. The game, scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. will be the first official event on the new stadium turf. Both events are free.

Two men rob home

WARREN — Two men broke into a home in the 1500 block of Hollywood Street Northeast and stole jewelry, check books and a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu that was in the driveway. The vehicle was later found abandoned at Parkside and Genesse with a small amount of jewelry inside. The value of the jewelry stolen Wednesday was not available.

Peace Corps involvement

HOWLAND — Robi Michelle Rawl, 28, the daughter of Robert and Karen Rawl of Howland, has been accepted into the Peace Corps. Rawl and her husband, William Marbury, departed for South Africa on July 19 and are now training to become teacher resource Peace Corps Volunteers. Upon graduation from training, Rawl will be training teachers and building curriculum in a small cluster of primary schools. Rawl’s work with the school and community resource project focuses on rural communities that were greatly suppressed during apartheid.

Water boil alert

NILES — Those receiving water from the city of Niles are being asked to boil their water until Saturday. According to police, a break in a waterline Wednesday is the cause for the boil alert.

Flight 93 dedication

SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) — A stretch of Route 219 in Somerset County was renamed Thursday in honor of the victims of Flight 93. Flight 93 was en route from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco on Sept. 11, 2001, when it crashed as passengers apparently tried to rush the cockpit of the hijacked airliner. All 33 passengers, seven crew members and the hijackers died.
