Shooting on South Side kills one man

The victim was either the homeowner or landlord, police say.

YOUNGTOWN — Police are investigating a shooting that took place at a South Side house Wednesday afternoon. The victim later died at a local hospital.

Police were not releasing any names, but it is known that two men were taken into custody at 357 Carroll St., where they lived.

Capt. Kenneth Centorame, chief of detectives, said the two who resided at the house are father and son, and the man who was shot was either the homeowner or landlord.

A neighbor said four or five shots were fired at 5:23 p.m.

Centorame said the victim and another man drove up to the house and went inside. After the shooting, the two men got back into the car and drove off.

He didn’t know who was driving the car.

Answering a 911 call, police arrived and couldn’t find the victim; however, there was evidence that somebody had been injured.

About the same time, Centorame explained, a man who had been shot arrived in a car at St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he later died.

One officer said the victim was shot in the chest.

Taken into custody

Police took an older-looking man into custody. He was wearing black pants but no shirt.

A second, younger man could be seen handcuffed and sitting on the front porch of the 21⁄2-story house. Police tested his hands to determine whether he had fired a gun.

A neighbor who didn’t want her name used said the two men moved into the house about two months ago.

“They never said anything to me. They were shut up in the house all the time,” the neighbor said.

She noted that the only thing she saw them do was use their grill to cook.

This would be the city’s 23rd homicide this year, and the fourth in the last nine days. There were 17 homicides at this time in 2006.
