NOTEBOOK | From Eastwood Field
All-Stars: The New York-Penn League on Wednesday announced the All-Star teams for its 2007 All-Star Game, which will be held Aug. 14 at Dutchess Stadium in Hudson Valley, NY. The American League will include six Scrappers. They are; Kyle Landis, Garrett Rieck, Heath Taylor, Todd Martin, Alex Castillo and Jansy Infante. The National League team will include Howland native and Warren G. Harding graduate Justin Byler.
Star-spangled performance: Prior to Wednesday's first pitch, 12-year-old Elizabeth Hess of Niles wowed the Eastwood Field crowd with a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. Hess originally was scheduled to perform prior to the July 19 game against Staten Island. However, she was benched when Scrappers officials realized they had booked two singers for the same night. Hess was invited to return to Eastwood Field Tuesday, only to be sidelined because of a rain-out. Wednesday, the third time proved to be the charm for the girl many were referring to as a future American Idol.
Odds N Ends: Four of the Tuesday's seven scheduled NY-PL games were rained out.....Mike Eisenberg has started one game in each of the seven doubleheaders the Scrappers have been involved in over the past two years.....Scrappers infielder Todd Martin continues to lead the NY-PL in batting average (.387) and RBI (38).....Scrappers manager Tim Laker was once a teammate of Mike Bascik, the pitcher who surrendered Barry Bonds' historic 756th home run.....Tonight the Scrappers will don green jerseys as part of Irish Night. The jerseys will be auctioned off throughout the night.
