Commission approves Youngstown school levy plan

YOUNGSTOWN — The state-appointed fiscal oversight commission appointed to oversee city school district spending has endorsed a school board plan to ask voters to approve a 9.5-mill operating levy to help resolve a $15 million budget deficit.

The Financial Planning and Supervision Commission approved the board plan this morning.

The tax, if approved by voters, is expected to generate about $5 million a year in new revenue, and, combined with a series of spending cuts already in place and more being planned, should enable the district to balance its budget within about four years.
