How to use Flexcar
Students, employees and staff at Ohio State University can rent cars from Flexcar, a car-sharing company that the university hopes will cut down on a campus parking crunch. How it works:
Drivers first join Flexcar online and pay a $35 annual membership fee. (Flexcar will waive the fee for Ohio residents who join before Oct. 31.) Members get a coded card in the mail and can then reserve vehicles online or over the phone.
At an arranged time, a driver swipes the card over a windshield to open a designated car and retrieves the keys from the glove compartment, returning the car to the same parking spot when finished.
Drivers pay $8 per hour or $55 per day to use a vehicle. The fee covers gasoline for up to 150 miles, insurance, maintenance, a reserved parking spot and emergency service. If the gas tank is low, drivers fill up using a special credit card kept inside the vehicle.
