YOUNGSTOWN — The Marcus Garvey Association plans a two-day African Cultural Fest at Millcreek Community Center, 496 Glenwood Ave.
“Re-examining and Rebuilding the Black Family Structure” will be the topic discussed by a panel at 6 p.m. Friday.
Participants will be Olajide I. Ajayi and RaShawd Davis, Youngstown State University students; Dr. Daniel Ayana, YSU history department; Dr. Sara Brown Clark, clerk of courts in Youngstown; Officer Anthony Harris, Youngstown Police Department’s Family Investigative Services; Dr. Ndinzi Masagara, YSU foreign languages and literature department; Dr. Christian Onwudiwe, YSU criminal justice department; Dr. Donna Sloan, YSU religious studies department; and Jimma McWilson, president and chief executive officer of F.A.M.I.L.Y. Empowerment Student Achievement Institute.
A “parade of pride” will be at 10 a.m. Saturday with participants gathering at Warren and Hillman streets and then marching west along Warren Avenue to Glenwood Avenue, turning north on Glenwood and into the center’s parking lot. Saturday’s activities, planned from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., will feature arts and crafts, food, music, dance, drill teams and vendors.
The association is sponsoring the event with YSU African Studies and the Buckeye Review.
Antique gun show set
HARMONY, Pa. — An extraordinary assortment of firearms, tools of everyday life in 18th- and 19th-century rural western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio, will be showcased in an antique gun show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Harmony Museum, 218 Mercer St., Harmony, Pa. Proceeds will benefit the museum operations.
On display will be flintlock, percussion and cartridge firearms and accouterments made before 1898, with focus on those made in the region. Most of the firearms displayed were used for hunting and target competitions, although some have a military history. Many now are valuable works of art.
INXS cancels appearance
CLEVELAND — INXS will not perform at the 12th annual Taste of Cleveland, planned Aug. 31-Sept. 3 at the Time Warner Cable Amphitheater in Tower City. Refunds are available at point of purchase. The event features food and music.
