Scrappers time change

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ Sept. 7 game against State College has been moved to 5:05 p.m. due to the Penn State-Notre Dame game that weekend.

reaches world series

The Youngstown 13 All Stars defeated South Lexington, KY. Stars 6-4 Tuesday to claim the Ohio Valley Regional championship.

Youngstown will advance to the Babe Ruth World Series in Loudonville, VA. where they will be the first 13 year old team to represent Youngstown in the World Series. 

Justin Wagler recorded the pitching win with five strong innings. He added two hits. Cody Pitzo threw two innings for the save.

James Coates scored twice and tripled in two runs while Tim McCoy added two RBIs.

Making the Ohio Valley Regional all-tournament team were Coates, Forrest Perron, Dillion Williams and Ricky Jones.

The members of the team are Wagler, Tony Mehle, Drew Delsignore, Ryan Halicki, Brad Smith, Pitzo, Coates, Jones, McCoy, Williams, Brendon Cox, Perron and Vince Pitzulo.

Bill Delsignore is the manager and the coaches are Bob Halicki, Brian Cox and Rick Banna.

Boardman Pony team
falls to Bedford, 6-4

DAVIDSON, NC — A baseball team from Bedford, MA. defeated the Boardman 14 Pony squad 6-4 in eight innings in the zone championship.

It was the second consecutive year that Bedford eliminated Boardman (42-5).

Boardman took a 4-0 lead after two innings, highlighted by a two-run double by Johnny Fithian and a two-run single by Tyler Walls.

team wins twice

AKRON — The Boardman junior softball team ran their Central States Regional record to 3-0 with wins over Illinois 8-5 and Nebraska 13-0 Monday.

Illinois jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opener. In the fourth inning Boardman received back-to-back triples by Brooke Meenachan and Alex DiDomenico to score twice.

In the fifth Boardman took the lead with a five-run outburst that included a bases-loaded double by DiDomenico.

DiDomenico finished with two hits and four RBIs. DiDomenco and Meenachan combined on a two-hitter with seven strike outs. Meenachan got the win in relief.

In the five-inning decision over Nebraska, Boardman scored five runs in the top of the first and had 17 hits.

Shayla DeCapita had two hits and scored twice, Meenachan had two hits including an inside-the-park home run and DiDomenico added a double and a triple.

O’Halloran swims
for Team USA

BANGKOK, Thailand — Tyler O’Halloran, a graduate of Boardman High and the Univ. of Texas will be swimming in the World University Games for Team USA this weekend.

beat Highland 7-3

Youngstown 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars defeated Highland, Ind., 7-3.

Dan Mioni pitched 51⁄3 innings, allowing just one run, while Nick Lesky pitched the final 12⁄3 innings for the save.

Ryan Gallagher and Mioni both had two hits while Sutton Whiting, Bob Vazquez, Dan Popio, Ronnie Bovo, John Beatty, Brock McGivern and Mark Leone all added hits.

Indians call up
infielder Cabrera

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Indians made a series of roster moves Tuesday, calling up infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and signing infielder Russell Branyan to a minor league contract.

Cabrera started the season at Double-A Akron, where he hit .310 with eight home runs and 54 RBIs in 96 games and also stole 23 bases. He was promoted July 30 to Triple-A Buffalo and hit .316 with three RBIs in nine games.

Niners pay tribute to
Walsh in opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers will wear their cherry-red throwback jerseys in their regular season opener against Arizona as part of a tribute to former coach Bill Walsh.

Owner John York said Monday that the 49ers have been given permission to don the same jerseys they wore when Walsh roamed the sideline for their Monday night opener Sept. 10.

The club still is formulating the rest of its tribute to Walsh, who died July 30 after a bout with leukemia.
