DEATH ROW RECORD At a glance
RECORD: John Spirko, sentenced to die 25 years ago for killing a northwestern Ohio postmistress, has received seven reprieves, the most under Ohio’s 1981 death penalty law.
REASON: His attorneys have asked the state to delay Spirko’s execution to allow more time for DNA testing on evidence found at and around the crime scene. Authorities are also looking for individuals who could be alternate suspects to test their DNA.
RULING: Gov. Ted Strickland says he won’t begin his review of Spirko’s request for clemency until the testing is complete.
QUOTE: “My hope is anyone who gives this a careful in-depth look will conclude there’s just far too much doubt here to allow an execution to take place — and beyond that, John Spirko didn’t commit this crime.” — Spirko’s attorney, Alvin Dunn.
