A win for downtown

WWE wrestling fans packed the Chevrolet Centre to see their favorites do battle. Above, Paul Burchill and Chuck Palumbo mixed it up Tuesday night. Wrestlers from two WWE television shows — “ECW” and “Smackdown” — provided the entertainment. The show was the first center event to be televised to a national audience. At right, fans brought their signs to show support of their favorite wrestler as well as Youngstown. Tuesday’s ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) bouts started at 7:30 and aired later Tuesday evening on the Sci-Fi cable channel. The remaining contests will air at 8 p.m. Friday on “Smackdown” on The CW cable channel. The last time the WWE televised a show from Youngstown was in 1995. Before construction of the downtown entertainment arena, wrestling shows were staged at Struthers Fieldhouse and Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University. Some of the top wrestlers from ECW and WWE appeared at the wrestling show.
