YWCA to construct 30 housing units

YOUNGSTOWN — The YWCA has received a $3.2 million housing tax credit to assist with a project that will increase affordable housing options for disadvantaged working women, and women with disabilities.

The organization plans to construct 30 housing units on the third floor of its headquarters, 25 W. Rayen Ave. The $7.5 million plan includes 18 one-bedroom units and 12 efficiency units, said Constance Shaffer, executive director.

The YWCA Youngstown was one of three applicants in the state to receive the grant.

“This is a dream come true,” said Shaffer. “We’ve been working on this since 1996.”

The new units will replace 35 dormitory style units already in place at the facility. New units will each be equipped with bathrooms and kitchens, said Shaffer.

“We’re very, very happy to be able to renovate this building and bring quality of life to the women of the Valley.”

The YWCA has received an additional $1 million in grants for the project, said Shaffer. The organization intends to begin a capital campaign to generate the additional funds shortly, she said.
