Boxer Spadafora getting out of prison

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — Former International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Paul Spadafora will be released later this week from the state prison at Albion, where he has been held since May 30 on a parole violation.

Spadafora has been held since he appeared in court to accuse his former fiancee’, Nadine Russo, of domestic abuse, despite a condition of his parole that he have no contact with her.

“Although the board acted in good faith in beginning technical parole violation proceedings against Mr. Spadafora, there is not enough evidence available to continue with parole violation proceedings at this time,” said Robert Bushey, spokesman for the state Parole and Probation Board. Spadafora will be released within four days, Bushey said Monday.

Spadafora and his attorney had denied new allegations by Russo that he choked her in May.

Spadafora was paroled in April 2006 after spending 13 months in prison and a boot camp for shooting Russo in October 2003. She has since given birth to their son.

Spadafora had won both of his fights since he was paroled and remains undefeated with a professional record of 40-0-1.

Had Spadafora been found guilty of the parole violation, he would have served the rest of his 21-month to five-year prison sentence.
