Lordstown school levy meeting is set

LORDSTOWN – Interested residents are asked to attend a school levy committee meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the school administration offices.

Superintendent Bill Pfahler said Monday that it’s the first organizational meeting for placing a 5-mill, 30-year capital improvement levy on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.

The issue, Pfahler explained, will generate about $8 million to remodel the school district-owned Gordon D. James Career Center to become the elementary building.

About $500,000 will be used to replace the roof on the high school building, he added.

If the levy passes, Pfahler said, the career center will be remodeled with a new gymnasium and heating and cooling system.

In this way, the superintendent explained, the current elementary building can either be sold or demolished. This would reduce the number of school buildings in the district, saving about $200,000 annually that is paid for maintenance, utilities and insurance at the elementary school, Pfahler said.
