Smith anniversary is celebrated at family gathering
AUSTINTOWN -- Norman and Thelma Smith of Austintown were honored April 25 during a family gathering at their home in celebration of their 65th wedding anniversary.
The former Thelma Weimer and Mr. Smith were united in marriage on that date in 1942 in West Virginia, before he left for service in the Philippine Islands during Word War II. Afterward he was employed at Republic Steel Corp. until he retired.
Mrs. Smith worked for many years at the Ben Franklin Store in Canfield.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith are members of the Austintown Community Church, where they were active in the scouting programs. They also enjoyed bowling and camping.
The Smiths' family includes Norman Lee and Diana Smith of New Middletown, the Rev. Gary and Lynn Smith of Canton, Dennis Smith of Austintown and Bill Dixon of Austintown, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Their daughter, Debbie Dixon, is deceased.
