HALL OF FAME \ East High athletics



William David Ash (football): A 1988 graduate, Ash was a four-year center and linebacker for coach Herman Jackson. He later attended Youngstown State. His brother, Daniel, and sister, Kareem, are previous East Hall of Fame inductees.
Kevin D. Brown (football): A 1998 graduate, Brown earned three letters in football and four in track. He played tight end and defensive end, earning honorable mention all-City as a junior and a first team selection as a senior. He was also captain of the city championship track team his senior year, helping East advance to state in the 4x800-meter relay. Brown played outside linebacker at YSU under Jim Tressel, helping the Penguins to three playoff appearances, and later played briefly for the Atlanta Falcons and the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.
Carson D. Brown (football): A 1966 graduate, Brown was a middle linebacker under Ed DiGregorio who earned All-City honors as a senior. Brown was also a catcher for the baseball team under Art "Chippy" Flauto. Brown later attended Mount Union where he was nominated for "Little All American." He then transferred to YSU.
Vicki Wheeler Cox (special award: track/volleyball): The 1987 graduate made all-City in volleyball her senior year and was a four-year letterwinner in track, running the 200, 400 relay and 800 relay. Both relays qualified for state her senior year under coach Claude Bentley.
David K. Dawson (football): A 1986 graduate, Dawson was named All-City as a senior. He was selected for the MVCA all-star game was selected as WYTV player of the week and USA Today player of the week.
Roger DiFrangia (Memorial Award-football): A member of the class of 1949, DiFrangia was a tailback on the 1948 city championship team. After his discharge from the service, he began a 26-year career with the U.S. Postal Service and also ran a landscaping business. He was an avid bowler.
Ralph "Randy" Gamble III (baseball): A 1981 graduate, Gamble was a four-year letterman at East, the team captain as a senior and selected All-City as a senior. He was pitcher and played first base. Randy also played Class B and AA. He played golf at East, as well, and was team captain his senior year. His coach for baseball and golf was Carl Peachock.
David E. Hughes (football): A 1977 graduate, Hughes was an outstanding middle linebacker, earned him All-City and all-state honors as a senior. He was credited with scoring two touchdowns as a defensive player.
Joel (Johnson) Friendly (football): A 1980 graduate, Friendly, known as "Tucum" to his friends, started his football career at North High, playing his freshman and sophomore years. He transferred to East, playing his junior and senior years. He was an All-City selection in 1979 as a senior. He was also selected for the All-Northeastern Ohio team as honorable mention. He also played basketball for three years, after playing his freshman year at North.
Alfred T. Johnson (football): A member of the class of 1971, Johnson was a center and linebacker on the varsity team from 1968-70. He was chosen All-City as a senior and was named the team's Lineman of the Year." Johnson was also the starting catcher for three years on the baseball team.
Richard J. Magni (baseball): A 1954 graduate, Magni was the starting left fielder on East's district championship team. He also played in the Class B League before going onto Youngstown College. Magni also played basketball at East, helping the Golden Bears to a share of the City championship.
Kevin L. Parker (football): A 1981 graduate, Parker was a center and guard on the football team. He was named All-City as a senior. He also played basketball for East.
Carl Severino (baseball): A graduate in 1964, Severino pitched and played shortstop for the Golden Bears. Some of his teammates were Jack Elliott, Angelo Verdream and Zeke Zorio. He was also a two-year defensive back on the football team and was the starting point guard for three years in basketball. He later played baseball at Youngstown State.
Laytton (Lenoir) Shepherd (football): A 1978 graduate, Shepherd was All-City as a junior and honorable mention All-Ohio. He suffered an injury as a senior but was still named second team All-City. He led the City with 1,322 rushing yards in 1976 and scored 12 touchdowns. He also lettered in baseball and track at East.
Willie Wynn Stokes (football): A 1961 graduate, Stokes played a variety of athletics at East. He was a three-year letterman and All-City selection in football as offensive and defensive end. He helped the basketball team win the city championship with an 18-1 record, and in track, the Golden Bears won the city championship his junior year and he qualified for the state meet in the quarter-mile and mile relay.
Steven Woodberry (football): A 1990 graduate, Woodberry was a three-time All-City selection. He was also named All-Northeast Ohio twice and later played at Eastern Michigan. Woodberry also played baseball his senior year and ran track his sophomore and junior years. He set the record in the 100 meters as a sophomore (10.7 seconds).
Robert Zoria (baseball): A 1964 graduate, Zoria, better known as "Zeke," earned letters as an infielder and was a member of the 1961 sectional championship team. His play at third base was outstanding and he was a steady performer as a batter.
