Skull turned over to coroner

WARREN -- A human skull found by a dog in Warren Township has been turned over to the Trumbull County coroner's office in an attempt to identify it.
Township Police Chief Thomas Rush said Wednesday that about 25 firefighters and police searched a 100-acre wooded area off Hewitt Gifford Road until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday but couldn't find any other remains.
Police were called about 4 p.m. to a home at 3480 Hewitt Gifford. A woman found the skull near the cage for her dogs.
Police and firefighters used cadaver dogs to search the wooded and swampy area behind the house, but they didn't find anything.
Rush pointed out there are four cemeteries in the area, and wild dogs and coyotes roam the area, suggesting the skull may have been dug up by another animal.
Rush said it hasn't been determined if the skull is that of a male or female or a young or older person. The skull is missing its lower jaw, but some teeth remain in the upper jaw.
Township police and Warren city police both have reports of missing women, Rush said, noting comparisons will be made with them to come up with a match.
These are the second human remains found in the county in about a year.
On July 23, 2006, remains were found in a marshy area near the state park at Mosquito Lake in Bazetta Township. They remain unidentified.
