Scholarship offers
YOUNGSTOWN -- College-bound high school seniors can apply for scholarship awards being offered jointly by the Youngstown Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Clubs, Inc., and the Ebony Ladies Golf and Youth Foundation.
The two organizations are partnering to provide scholarships to assist students with books and instructional fees.
The groups are seeking students in the Youngstown and Warren areas who have demonstrated academic ability and also have financial need. To apply, seniors should contact their high school guidance counselors or phone (330) 747-1176 for more information.
Steelers in ELO
EAST LIVERPOOL -- The Pittsburgh Steelers players will take on East Liverpool High's wrestling team in a charity basketball game May 8 at 8 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are on sale for 7 and will be on sale at the high school from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. All game day tickets will be 10 at the door.
There will be an autograph session at halftime of the game. The proceeds will benefit the East Liverpool wrestling program.
Canfield dominatesPenn-Ohio golf
CANFIELD -- Jim Perry and John Scarsella shared medalist honors with 73s in leading Canfield Golf Headquarters-Marlowe Coffee to a dominating win Sunday in the Penn Ohio Golf League at Tippecanoe Country Club.
Canfield scored 33 points to outdistance Grove City/TMS Physical Therapy (161/2), Sharon Hickory VFW (141/2) and Youngstown Ohio Carpet (8).
Matt Kempe of Canfield shot 74, while Bob Blaze led Sharon with 75, Zack Mansky and Josh Zarlenga shot 79s for Youngstown, and Frank Zingone had 80 for Grove City.
After two weeks, Canfield leads the overall standings with 611/2 points, Sharon has 341/2, Grove City has 261/2 and Youngstown has 211/2.
PAC awards
*GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College freshman Alex Eaton was named Presidents' Athletic Conference men's track athlete of the week.
Eaton won the 400-meter dash (49.24 seconds) at the IUP Invitational Saturday. He also ran on Thiel's winning 4x400 relay (3:20.8) and the third place 4x100 relay (43.0).
*NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Presidents' Athletic Conference named Westminster freshman Jennifer Emery (Laurel) as the softball hitter of the week.
Emery, a freshman pitcher and first baseman, led the Titans to a 3-1 week by compiling a .600 batting average (6-for-10), including a double, a triple, five RBIs and five runs scored. Emery (7-5) also earned two wins as Westminster's starting pitcher with a 1.40 ERA as she gave up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and one walk to go with eight strikeouts over 10 innings.
Miller secondat PGA event
Dennis Miller, representing Mill Creek Golf Course, tied for second place at the Northern Ohio PGA Callaway-Pepsi Stroke Play Series.
Using the Stableford scoring system, Miller scored 17 points, one behind winner Gary Trivisonno of Strongsville. Miller earned 866.67 for his performance.
Also, Jonah Karzmer of Boardman scored 14 points to tie for ninth place and earn 425, and Mike Shulas of Salem scored nine points, tying for 20th place, to earn 20.
In the senior division, George Bellino shot 81, to finish in seventh place.

Pirates to providekids with gloves
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Pirates will team up with Dick's Sporting Goods to hold the "Gloves for Kids" event, a program designed to provide underprivileged youth with gloves and other baseball equipment.
The event, which is spearheaded by Pirates play-by-play announcer Greg Brown, will take place Thursday from 6-9 p.m. at the Dick's Sporting Goods store at the Mall at Robinson.
Fans will also receive a buy-one, get-one-free Pirates ticket offer and a 5 Dick's gift card. All proceeds will benefit Pirates Charities, Wilkinsburg Little League and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
