AUSTINTOWN -- Police have released the name of a man killed in an accident Sunday morning on New Road. John C. Clapp, 22, of 4136 New Road, was killed around 5:23 a.m. The accident occurred just east of the state Route 11 overpass. The car failed to negotiate a curve and flipped onto its roof, said Lt. Bryan Kloss. Kloss said speed likely was a factor in the crash, but that won't be officially determined until a reconstruction of the accident is finished. He said the department also is waiting to see results from blood tests on the victim.
High winds cause damage
TRANSFER, Pa. -- High winds damaged buildings and roofs, broke windows and uprooted trees in an area south of Greenville, Mercer County 911 dispatch center reported. A dispatcher said the center began receiving calls after the wicked weather began around 7:25 p.m. He said numerous police and fire agencies plus the Mercer County Emergency Management Agency responded. No one was injured. It wasn't known late Monday evening whether a tornado had touched down, the dispatcher said.
New Poland principal
POLAND -- At Monday's board of education meeting, school officials hired Vince Procopio as Poland Seminary High School's new principal. Procopio was given a two-year contract, effective Aug. 1, and will receive an annual salary of 85,230, Superintendent Robert Zorn said. He will replace Brian Wolf, who is retiring after having returned to the high school for one year as an interim principal, Zorn added.
5-year license suspension
WARREN -- A 44-year-old Warren man has been sentenced to 120 days in the Northeast Ohio Community Alternative Program here and a five-year driver's license suspension after pleading guilty to his seventh driving-under-the-influence charge. Patrick M. Hartle, of Sassafras Lane Southwest, was convicted of the fourth-degree misdemeanor in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court in January and sentenced Monday. His sentence also includes an 800 fine, intensive supervision probation for five years, participation in a drug and alcohol prevention program at his expense, random alcohol testing and a prohibition against purchasing alcohol. Judge Peter Kontos warned Hartle that if he is caught driving for any reason during the next five years, he will be sent to prison to serve one year. Hartle's latest DUI arrest came in June in Warren Township. He tested 0.17 on a breath test, his indictment says. The legal limit is 0.08. According to court documents, Hartle had previous DUI convictions in 1988, 1990, 1995 and 1997.
Cars ransacked in lot
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating smashed-out car windows at Penske Truck Rental at 350 Victoria Road. Lt. Bryan3 Kloss said the damage was discovered on the lot Monday around 6:30 a.m. He said the cars belong to people who park there while they have trucks out on the road. About 12 cars were ransacked. Kloss said police haven't been able to talk to the car owners yet, so they don't know at this point what was stolen.
Attempted-rape report
GIRARD -- Police are investigating the reported attempted rape of a 24-year-old city woman. According to police reports, the woman told officers she went to the home of a 49-year-old city man for whom she had been doing domestic work Sunday afternoon. She told officers she drank half a can of beer given to her by the man and began to feel groggy. Reports say the woman told officers the man tried to sexually assault her, but she was able to push him away and get to a West Liberty Street business to call police. No arrest has been made.
Teens report being raped
BOARDMAN -- Two 18-year-old high school women reported being raped by an acquaintance this past weekend after a night of heavy drinking, police said. The women were at a friend's house on Sciota Avenue when the alleged attack occurred between 2 and 3:30 a.m. Saturday, said Detective Greg Stepuk. The accused is an adult male, he said. Both women were examined at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Lawmaker's open houses
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Pa. State Rep. Michele Brooks, of Jamestown, R-17th, will have two open houses Thursday at her legislative offices. Constituents are encouraged to meet Brooks and her staff. The first open house will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the office in the Sandy Lake Borough Building, 3271 S. Main St., Sandy Lake. Another open house will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 3 Greenville Plaza West, Hadley Road, Greenville.
Fire destroys house
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire destroyed a vacant two-story house on Kimmel Street at 7 p.m Monday. Battalion Chief Terrence Jordon said the blaze was arson. There were no injuries.
