ROUNDUP Friday's other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Red Sox 7, Yankees 6
BOSTON -- Alex Rodriguez hit two more homers, but Coco Crisp tied the game with a two-run triple and then scored on Alex Cora's blooper during a five-run eighth inning for Boston. Crisp was already in the highlights after toppling into the Boston bullpen in pursuit of Rodriguez's second homer of the game, a three-run shot in the fifth that gave the Yankees a 5-2 lead. Rodriguez went 3-for-4 and joined Mike Schmidt, who hit 12 homers in the first 15 games of the 1976 season, as the fastest to reach a dozen in baseball history. Kyle Snyder (1-0) allowed one walk and struck out one while getting two outs in the eighth. With closer Jonathan Papelbon unavailable after pitching in each of the previous two games, Hideki Okajima pitched the ninth for his first major league save. Okajima retired Derek Jeter on a groundout and walked Bobby Abreu before Rodriguez lined out to second base. Kevin Thompson struck out to end the game. Mariano Rivera (1-2) allowed two runs on three hits, striking out one in 2/3 of an inning.
Orioles 5, Blue Jays 4
BALTIMORE -- Nick Markakis singled in the winning run in the ninth inning to cap Baltimore's rally against Toronto. The Orioles trailed 4-2 in the eighth but came back against Toronto's beleaguered bullpen, which is without injured closer B.J. Ryan. Corey Patterson led off the ninth with a single off Victor Zambrano (0-1). After a sacrifice bunt by Paul Bako, Brian Roberts was intentionally walked. Melvin Mora then drew a walk to load the bases for Markakis, who grounded a single to right-center against the drawn-up infield. Chris Ray (2-1) got the win despite allowing two hits in the ninth. Mora hit a two-run homer and Markakis had three singles for the Orioles.
White Sox 5, Tigers 4
DETROIT -- Darin Erstad's tiebreaking single in the seventh inning lifted Chicago over Detroit. Juan Uribe and Tadahito Iguchi homered for Chicago and helped Nick Masset (1-0) earn his first major league victory. Masset allowed one hit in 11/3 innings. David Aardsma, Matt Thornton, and Mike MacDougal combined to retire six in a row in the seventh and eighth innings, and Bobby Jenks pitched the ninth for his fifth save in six opportunities. He gave up a double to Placido Polanco with two outs, who advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jenks struck out Gary Sheffield to end the game. With the game tied at 4, Rob Mackowiak led off the seventh with a single and was sacrificed to second. Erstad followed with a single to center off Jason Grilli (0-1). White Sox starter John Danks gave up four runs and six hits in 42/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four.
Athletics 16, Rangers 4
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rookie Travis Buck hit his first career homer and drove in a career-high five runs as Oakland stretched its winning streak to four games. Buck added a three-run double and Bobby Crosby doubled in two more during an eight-run second inning. Shannon Stewart and Nick Swisher added homers for Oakland. The Rangers lost for the fifth time in six games.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Cardinals 2, Cubs 1
CHICAGO -- Reliever-turned-starter Braden Looper allowed five hits in seven innings and Preston Wilson hit a long two-run homer in the seventh as St. Louis snapped a four-game losing streak. In just his fourth major league start, Looper (3-1) outdueled Ted Lilly (1-2) in the start of a series featuring a marquee managerial matchup between Lou Piniella and Tony La Russa. Jason Isringhausen pitched the ninth for his fourth save in as many chances.
Braves 7, Mets 3
NEW YORK -- Tim Hudson was downright stingy over eight sharp innings and Chipper Jones hit a two-run homer to help Atlanta beat New York. Kelly Johnson also had two hits for the Braves. Hudson (3-0) allowed five hits and walked two. He has allowed two runs in 29 innings this season for a microscopic 0.62 ERA.
Reds 2, Phillies 1, 10 innings
CINCINNATI -- Scott Hatteberg hit a two-out, solo homer that tied it in the ninth, and Brandon Phillips singled with the bases loaded in the 10th inning. One out away from closing out a combined one-hitter, Tom Gordon (0-1) gave up Hatteberg's homer on a belt-high, 3-1 pitch, the closer's first blown save in two chances. An inning after he let the lead slip away, Gordon gave up the game, too. He walked Javier Valentin with one out in the 10th, Ryan Freel followed with a single, and Adam Dunn walked. Phillips, who let in Philadelphia's run with a throwing error, then singled to left field to finish it. Jon Coutlangus (1-0) got the victory with one hitless inning.
Astros 6, Brewers 5
MILWAUKEE -- Craig Biggio hit his first grand slam in 13 years with one out in the ninth as Houston extended its winning streak to five. Chris Burke led off the ninth with a bunt single off Matt Wise (0-1). Adam Everett then walked on four pitches while trying to sacrifice Burke over. Brad Ausmus bunted, but catcher Johnny Estrada couldn't throw out Burke at third to load the bases with no outs. Greg Aquino struck out pinch-hitter Mike Lamb before Biggio hit his third career grand slam into the Brewers' bullpen in left center field. Bill Hall's leaping attempt at the wall came up short and he looked up to the sky in disbelief. Former Astros closer Brad Lidge walked Tony Gwynn and Rickie Weeks to begin the ninth, and after a strikeout, Prince Fielder homered down the right field line to cut Houston's lead to 6-5.
Friday's Pirates-Dodgers game was not completed for today's edition.
