Motorcycle rider hurt
HANOVERTON -- A 34-year-old Butler Township man was injured when he lost control of the dirt bike he was riding Saturday evening in a field behind his home on Woodsdale Road. Detective Sgt. Steve Walker of the Columbiana County Sheriff's Office said the accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. The rider, Richard Powers, was taken to Salem Community Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries were unknown late Saturday night.
Closing for work
AUSTINTOWN -- Beginning Monday, North Turner Road under Interstate 80 will be closed through late May, for bridge construction, says a press release from the Ohio Department of Transportation. The detour is Silica Road to Ohltown Road. Beginning April 30, North Lipkey Road under I-80 will be closed through early June for bridge construction. The detour will be Mahoning Avenue to state Route 45 to Silica Road. The work is part of a major widening and reconstruction of I-80. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by fall 2009.
Use caution in zones
ST. CLAIR -- The Ohio Department of Transportation is urging motorists to use caution through the Calcutta area because of multiple work zones on state Route 170 and the intersections of Calcutta-Smith Ferry Road and Dresden Avenue. An ODOT official said three road construction projects are taking place in that area 24 hours a day, five to six days a week. Motorists are asked to slow down and pay attention to changing traffic patterns.
Officials to meet
VOLANT, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners will have their weekly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Volant Borough Building. The commissioners conduct one evening meeting each month at a location outside the county government. The borough building is on Pa. Route 208 across from Volant Mills.
Continuing contract
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield school board has granted a continuing contract to Jennifer Stith, a teacher at Seaborn Elementary School, for the 2007-08 school year. The board also announced that the annual Seaborn School Fair will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Soap Box Derby races
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Western Pa. Soap Box Derby will be conducting races at Scotland Meadows Park in Union Township. Racing will begin at 9 a.m. daily. Events include rally race days April 28-29 and Sept. 8- 9 and the local Soap Box race June 9.
