Awards presented by Masons



Three individuals were honored for their outstanding accomplishments.
STEUBENVILLE -- David J. Scarpone of Jefferson County, Stephanie Cross of Warren and Christopher Douglas Wilshusen of Boardman were honored by the 24th Masonic District on April 21 at a 6:30 p.m. dinner meeting at The Rose.
Scarpone was named the recipient of the 2007 Community Service Award by Masons in Carroll, Columbiana, Jefferson and Mahoning counties. He is a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, where he is a judge in District Court 3 and a member of Ohio State Bar Association Board of Governors,
Cross and Wilshusen received the Excellence in Youth Award.
Cross is a junior at Warren G. Harding High School, where she carries a GPA of 3.7. Vice president of the Key Club and a soccer team member, she is a tutor and team mentor and a Relay for Life team member. She belongs to Job's Daughters Bethel 35 in Niles, where she has held various offices, and collects food for the homeless and the mission on Elm Road.
Wilshusen, a Boardman High School junior, is a member of the National Honor Society and National Thespian Society. He participates in the school choir, church adult choir and choral, and men's chamber. He is a member the Youngstown Chapter of Demolay, where he has held many offices and has been the recipient of the Good Citizenship 11th Senatorial District Award.
The awards were presented by Michael A. Himes, Ohio's grand master, who oversees 116,000 Masons and more than 530 lodges.
During the past year the Masons gave 94,000 in college scholarships, contributed 125,000 to Ohio Summer Special Olympics, funded 70,000 in free training for hundreds of Ohio school teachers to recognize students at nonacademic risk, and provided 12 million in elderly care and help for needy Ohio families and individuals through the Masons Charitable Foundation.
