Switka's 2-hitter leads Ursuline to SVC victory
Howland defeated Poland to remain unbeaten in MAC play.
STRUTHERS -- Robert Switka tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts to lead the Ursuline High baseball team to a 4-1 victory over Warren Harding Thursday at Cene Park.
Switka, a junior, permitted two walks and didn't allow an earned run in the Steel Valley Conference game.
At the plate for the Irish (7-2, 2-0 SVC), Ed Rohan had two hits and an RBI, Ross Revella knocked in two runs and Joe Wielbruda also had two hits.
Dan Popadak had both hits --singles -- for Harding (6-3, 0-1).
Warren JFK 8, Chaney 2
YOUNSTOWN -- Senior Vince Peluso had seven strikeouts and four walks in a two-hitter.
Brian Guarnieri, a junior, and Tim McBride, a senior, each had two RBIs for JFK (7-4-1).
Joe Morales and Francisco Morales each had a hit for Chaney (1-8).
Howland 3, Poland 2
HOWLAND -- Andy Zigmont knocked in Matt Preston with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth in the Metro Athletic Conference game.
To end the game, Zigmont made a diving stop at third when he fielded a grounder toward the hole. He recovered and threw out Mark Turnbull.
Of Howland's six hits, Zigmont, a sophomore, had two hits and an RBI while teammates Zach Byler and Joe Aulizia each knocked in a run for the Tigers (6-1, 3-0).
Senior Greg Patterson (2-0) had six strikeouts.
David White doubled for Poland (9-4).
Salem 5, Niles 4
SALEM -- A four-run second inning was the difference for the Quakers (5-6, 2-3 MAC).
Chip Hank and Jim Armeni each had two hits for Salem. Anthony Roberts, Mike Kelly and Anthony Capogreco led the Red Dragons (4-3, 1-1) with two hits apiece.
Girard 9, Campbell 8
GIRARD -- Dave Sherock had two doubles and drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk for the Indians (7-3).
Nick Devore and Joe Tait each had two hits while reliever Kris Brown (2-1) earned the victory.
For the Red Devils (2-4), Dan Sacui hit a first-inning two-run homer after Raul Pizzaro tripled. Rich Tisone had two hits and drove in a run.
Massillon Jackson 14, Fitch 1
AUSTINTOWN -- Jason Bagoly went 3-for-3 and Nick Wiery went 2-for-3 for Fitch in the Federal League game.
Bagoly, a sophomre, had two doubles and a single for the Falcons (6-6, 1-2).
Jackson improved to 9-1, 4-1.
East Palestine 10, Mineral Ridge 3
EAST PALESTINE -- Taylor Snyder's two hits included a triple and he drove in three runs for the Bulldogs (11-0, 7-0 ITCL Tier One). He also stole four bases and tossed the first three innings to get the mound win.
Scott Boggs' two singles drove in two runs while Dan Hanolt tripled.
McDonald 15, Leetonia 5
McDONALD -- Nick Gatta and Tom John each had three hits, while Paul Logar added two hits and three RBIs for McDonald (6-5, 5-2 ITCL Tier Two). Anthony Raschilla also had two hits and Steven Hughes pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Jon Williams doubled for Leetonia.
Jackson-Milton 5, Southern 1
SALINEVILLE -- Ryan Clawson's bases-loaded double sparked the Bluejays (7-4, 5-3 ITCL Tier Two).
Winning pitcher Matt Shields (2-0) struck out 10 batters and walked none.
Nick McClarren and Brian Gibbs each had two hits, with Gibbs driving in a run.
Lowellville 14, Western Reserve 11
BERLIN CENTER -- The Rockets (5-4, 5-3 ITCL Tier Two), ahead 12-9, iced the game with a two-run seventh inning.
Dante Abbas hit three singles and drove in two runs to pace the Rockets. Mike Demetro added two singles, drove in two runs and stole two bases.
Hubbard 5, Champion 1
CHAMPION -- Corey Hitt hit two doubles and drove in two runs for the Eagles (5-4, 1-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Frank Rosile's three hits included a double and Bo Slemon also doubled for Hubbard.
For Champion, Andy Deehr's two hits included a double while Andy Beachy had two singles.
Liberty 11, Newton Falls 0
NEWTON FALLS -- Jon Krause homered and had a double and Joel Buckley pitched a two-hitter for the Leopards.
Krause, who had three hits total, finished with five RBIs.
Buckley and Sam Jaffee also had three hits for the winners (3-5, 3-1 TAC).
One of the hits by Buckley and Jaffee was a double, as it was for teammate Matt Britton.
Aaron Walker and Dale Settle had Newton Falls' only hits.
West Branch 6, Marlington 5
ALLIANCE -- Willy Graham (3-0) worked six innings and scattered six hits to pick up the win for the Warriors (9-1, 5-2 Northeaster Buckeye Conference).
Trent Woods, Bo Beegle and Jarred Harris each had two hits for the Warriors. Chad Sirilla led the Dukes (5-5, 3-4) with three singles.
Late Wednesday
STRUTHERS -- Anthony Franceschelli was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning to give Mooney a 4-3 victory over Fitch.
Scott Smith (4-0) went the distance for the Cardinals, striking out four. Drew Fitzpatrick had two hits.
Joe Koch went 3-for-4 for Fitch.
Canfield 1, Poland 0
CANFIELD -- Andrew Turocy struck out 11 in pitching a four-hit shutout for the Cardinals (11-0). Turocy also had two hits and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Josh Dankovich added a triple in the win.
Lou Coppola gave up one unearned run on six hits for the Bulldogs (9-3).
Columbiana 7, Lisbon 2
LISBON -- J.D. Beck singled and tripled to lead the Clippers, while Corey Hile had two hits for Lisbon (0-8).
