County meet set Saturday at Poland



Seventeen schools will compete in the event in three divisions.
POLAND -- The 95th Mahoning County track and field championship scheduled Saturday will be held at Poland High School's stadium and not at Fitch High in Austintown, while the pole vault is set today at Boardman at 4:30 p.m.
The football field at Fitch High Falcon stadium is getting new turf. The track is being repaired with new construction for field events.
Seventeen county schools will compete in the event for an overall championship, along with Division I, II and III titles.
Division I schools entered are Boardman, Canfield, Fitch, Poland and West Branch. Campbell, Chaney, Mooney, Rayen, Struthers, Ursuline and Wilson are Div. II and Jackson-Milton, Lowellville, South Range, Springfield and Western Reserve are Div. III.
Sprint and hurdle events will start at 10 a.m. and field event preliminaries will start at 10:30. Running finals are scheduled for approximately 12:30 p.m.
Top sprinters entered
The boys' 100-meter dash record of 10.9 seconds could be in jeopardy with five of the county's top sprinters competing in Fitch's Jason Anderson (11.1 seconds), South Range's David Maxwell (11.1), Mooney's Ryan Jones (11.1), Ursuline's Ryan Curry (11.2) and Boardman's T.J. Jordan (11.2).
The top four county high jumpers competing will be Boardman's Caleb Matthews, Canfield's Jakob Leon, Mooney's Dom Scarnecchia and Springfield's Ron Snyder, who have cleared 6 feet, 2 inches this season.
Boardman's Jake Lape (10:01.5) is the defending champion in the 3200. Poland's Jimmy Ramson (9:54.7), Boardman's Rick Lape (9:54) and Fitch's Ross Lenehan (10:04) will also contend.
Breanne Romeo of Boardman (57.l7) is the returning girls 400 champ. Ashley Galbraith (60.8) and Kelly Morckel (61.2) are entered.
Rachel Mariotti (48.4) of Lowellville, Alex Woytek (48.8) of Mooney, Taylor Kring (49.8) of West Branch, Karen Steiger (51.0) of West Branch and Missy Haug (51.0) of Poland are entered in the 300 hurdles.
Western Reserve's Alex Rathburn, defending champ, is the athlete to beat in the shot put (41 feet, 8 inches.) She also has the area's best throw in the discus (133-2).
Lakeview Invitational Saturday
The 12th Lakeview Invitational track and field meet with 16 boys and 15 girls teams is scheduled Saturday at Lakeview High's stadium.
Field events will get underway at 9:30 a.m. with sprint and hurdle prelims set for 10 and running finals at 12:30 p.m.
Teams entered are Berkshire, Brookfield, Chagrin Falls, Conneaut, Edgewood, Grand Valley, Jefferson, Lakeview, Maplewood, Mathews, McDonald (boys), Southington, Southeast, United and Warren JFK.
