Christian, Richards team co-MVPs



Christian, the team captain, was also the CHL's leading player.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jeff Christian and Chris Richards were named team co-MVPs by the Youngstown SteelHounds.
Christian was named team MVP for the second consecutive season. The team captain led the Central Hockey League with 116 points, scoring 38 goals and 78 assists (also first in the league). His best professional season also included a plus-45 rating, which led the CHL.
Richards finished second on the team and in the league with 106 points (39 goals, 67 assists) and joined Christian on the ALL-CHL first team. Richards had career-highs in points, goals and power play goals (22).
Both Christian and Richards were named starters for the Northern Conference in the CHL All-Star Game in Bossier City, La. Christian scored the game-winning goal for the North.
Also, Richards and Christian combined for 14 points in a 9-1 victory over the Rocky Mountain Rage Feb. 1. Richards scored four goals with three assists and Christian tied the CHL record with seven assists. Richards also recorded two six-point games, including in game five of the playoff series against the Colorado Eagles, when he scored a goal with five assists in the 6-3 victory.
Other honors
Goaltender Brad Roberts was named the team's rookie of the year. He finished the season with a 23-12-4 record, 2.70 goals against average and .895 save percentage. His 23 wins were tied for third in the CHL and his playing time of 2309 minutes, 54 seconds was fifth-best in the league. The Cassville, N.Y., went 11 straight games in February and March without a regulation loss. Over the three week stretch, Roberts went 10-0-1 and over the second half of the season he was 15-5-2.
The team's defenseman of the year was Jeff Alcombrack. In his second year with the SteelHounds he led the defensemen with 52 points (9 goals, 43 assists). He also finished with five power play goals and a plus-17 rating. He joined Shaun Landolt and Stephen Margeson as the only Youngstown players to dress in every game.
Margeson was named to the team's Most Improved Player and was co-winner of the Unsung Hero award. In 64 games Margeson scored 17 goals and 22 assists, and had five points (three goals, two assists) in the playoffs.
The other winner of the Unsung Hero award was Brad Patterson, who had a career high 41 points (13 goals, 28 assists).
