YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown's Darnell "Deezol" Boone will be a featured bout on a professional boxing show at the Chevrolet Centre June 15.
The show was announced Wednesday during a press conference at Anthony's By-The-River.
The show is the second major boxing event at the Centre, following Kelly Pavlik's victory over Lenord Pierre last November 2.
Boone (14-9-2, 5 KOs) will be involved in 10-rounders.
Boone vs. Vera
Boone, a super middleweight, engages with undefeated Brian Vera of Austin, Texas. Vera is 13-0 with 11 knockouts.
The Boone-Vera fights will be televised on Telefutura, a nationwide network.
Boone is now fighting out of Atlanta. However, in his last outing on March 22, the Youngstown native lost to Curtis Stevens of Brooklyn, N.Y., at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.
The 10-round super middleweight fight went the distance with Boone losing a unanimous decision. Stevens is 17-1 with 12 KOs.
Boone's previous fight was on the first Chevrolet Centre card in November when he beat William Johnson of Sardis, Miss., by unanimous decision in four rounds.
The 27-year-old Boone stands 5-9.
Billy Lyell (14-4, 2 KOs) of Niles was also in attendance at the press conference, where it was announced that he was scheduled to fight a 10-rounder against veteran Ramon "Yory Boy" Campas.
Pat Nelson, a booking agent for Lyell, a junior middleweight, claims he never signed a contract for his fighter.
"No one contacted me," said Nelson, who believes that Lyell was under the impression that he was at Wednesday's event to help the publicity.
Jack Loew, Lyell's trainer and manager, said Nelson is wrong. Nelson tried to set up a fight earlier between Lyell and Campas that would net Lyell 8,000 and Nelson would get 2,000, Loew said.
"Billy's still getting that money for this fight and [Nelson is] mad because he's not getting his 2,000 on the side," Loew said. "If he wants to come out and say what he said, then I'm going to have to come out with this.
"I'm telling you as Billy's trainer and manager that I'm 100 percent sure there will be a fight."
Posters being distributed had Lyell listed with Campas.
"I'm not trying to cause problems for the show in Youngstown," Nelson said, "but I know for a fact that I committed Billy to fight in May in Morgantown, W. Va., and in June in Niles in his hometown as a main event."
Nelson said that he contacted Campas' manager, too, with the same incredulity.
"I am positive that Yory Boy is not fighting in June because he's fighting in Miami in May and these guys don't fight every 30 days."
Nelson said Campas' manager hasn't signed any contract to fight in Youngstown.
"If they wanted Billy to fight, they were supposed to call me and that didn't happen. They didn't have me sign anything. If Billy is fighting, I'd know about it. No one ever contacted me or the other guy [Campas] who was supposed to be fighting him. Plus, they're both already in other fights, so it can't happen."
Nelson reiterated that Lyell hasn't signed an Ohio bout agreement to fight Campas and vice versa.
"I know that Yory Boy has not signed a contract agreeing to fight Lyell in Youngstown on that date. They're both scheduled for other fights."
June 15th card
The June 15 fight card promoter is Don Chargin.
There will also be an undercard, including Billy Salser (1-0) and Mark Salser (1-0) of Mansfield in separate four-round bouts.
Two other four-rounders are also scheduled.
Both trainer Jack Loew and Chargin, who was represented by Tom Vacca at Wednesday's press conference, said that Youngstown is trying to regain its reputation as a boxing area.
"This isn't all about Kelly Pavlik," said Loew, "it's about boxing."
Ringside tables are 100, ringside seats are 50 and reserved seats are 25. For tickets, call Loew at (330) 788-7592 or (330) 501-5713.
