Horizon honors11 scholars
INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State athletic teams has placed 11 individuals on the Horizon League's Winter Sport Academic teams.
The Penguins tied for third with Butler while UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee led the way with 12 student-athletes each.
Penguins earning all-academic honors are Lauren Branson (women's basketball), Becky Bertuzzi (women's swimming), Bethany Anderson (women's track and field), Jacquline Clonch (women's track and field), Lindsay Cobey (women's track and field), Darcelle Formby (women's track and field), Aaron Merrill (men's track and field), Dan Nemergut (men's track and field), Michael Perri, (men's track and field), John Shepard (men's track and field) and Drew Weizer (men's track and field).

NILES -- Tuesday's Youngstown State's Horizon League game against Cleveland State was canceled due to wet field conditions No makeup date has been set.
Today, the Penguins are set to play host to Akron at 7 p.m. at Eastwood Field.

YOUNGSTOWN -- For the second consecutive week, Youngstown State junior Bethany Anderson has been named the Horizon League Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
Last Friday at the Sea Ray Relays, Anderson eclipsed the NCAA Regional qualifying standard in the hammer for the second straight week. The Jamestown, N.Y., native posted a mark of 178'2" to fall just four inches short of her school-record set at the Duke Invitational. Her effort earned her a third-place finish in the event.
Anderson, who also earned the weekly honor three times during the most recent indoor campaign, holds the top hammer mark in the Horizon League by more than 18 feet.
Penguins finish10th in golf
BOWLING GREEN -- Junior Brittany Jones carded her best round of the Bowling Green Falcon Invitational to finish a team-best 35th place at the 54-hole event. YSU placed 10th out of 11 schools in the two-day event at Stone Ridge Golf Course. Jones rebounded following a windy and cold first day to fire a 79 on Tuesday as temperatures reached the mid-50s. On Monday, she had rounds of 89 and 97 battling temperatures in the 30's and winds of 15-20 mph. For the tournament she had a team-low 265.
Other team finishers for the Penguins were junior Adrianna DiLonardo who was 39th with a 266 (92-86-88), senior Bonnie Sherman (93-90-84) and junior Felicia Ciotola (88-94-85) who tied for 42nd at 267, freshman Brittany Stillwagon who placed 52nd with a 274 (90-96-88) and sophomore Mollie Boney who was 61st following a 287 (96-105-86).
Stocke leads men
MUNDELEIN, Ill. -- The Youngstown State men's golf team placed fifth at the Wiscon Corporation Invitational hosted by Loyola. Leading the Penguins was sophomore Ryan Stocke who placed 14th with a three-round 226.
In the team race, Western Illinois finished first with a three-round score of 873. YSU had rounds of 298, 312 and 304 to finish with a 914 for the tournament and place one shot ahead of Chicago State for fifth place. The Penguins were tied for third after the opening round on Monday.
Stocke finished with rounds of 76, 74 and 76 to lead the Penguins. Freshman Tim Morrow was the second-lowest YSU finisher placing 26th with a 232. Morrow had rounds of 74, 80 and 78.

Ezzo picksMercyhurst
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline senior Kim Ezzo will continue her tennis career at Mercyhurst. Ezzo won four straight Division II sectional titles and went 24-2 last fall, earning her first state tournament appearance. She has competed in tennis tournaments throughout the country and in Europe.

NORTH JACKSON -- An opening bid of 150,000, and not 373,000, is expected for the Meander Golf Course when the nine-hole layout is sold at auction set for Saturday at 10 a.m., announced Jeff Bryce, the auctioneer/realtor for Bryce Auction.
An article in Saturday's edition incorrectly indicated that the opening bid would be 373,000. The course is currently offered at 373,000 for pre-auction sale.
