Tampering case going to trial

WARREN -- The lawyer for a former Warren policeman charged with tampering with evidence and theft in office says he will take the case to trial.
Atty. Jeff Goodman of Warren said Tuesday that Dewey Gray, 40, of Bristolville, did nothing wrong.
"There will be no plea agreement in this case," Goodman said.
Gray and Goodman were in Judge Andrew Logan's courtroom Tuesday for a pretrial hearing, during which a trial date of June 11 and another pretrial hearing of May 15 were set.
Goodman said Gray's charges stem from allegations that he attempted to get a traffic ticket fixed Feb. 19, 2003, for a person who was working as a police informant.
Goodman said Gray's hands never touched the ticket, that he only brought it to the attention of Judge Terry Ivanchak of Warren Municipal Court for disposition.
Goodman said the investigation was done by Detective Jeff Hoolihan along with the FBI.
Hoolihan has referred questions about the case to Police Chief John Mandopolous, who has not returned phone calls on the subject.
One day after Gray was indicted, Eric Fisher of Francis Avenue Southeast was charged with attempted bribery for promising or giving 350 to have a Warren traffic ticket fixed on the same day as Gray's charge: Feb. 19, 2003.
Chuck Morrow, assistant county prosecutor, would not say whether Fisher is the man whose ticket Gray is accused of trying to fix.
